Continuing the Walking Tradition at SHSU

Do you walk for fun or fitness, or perhaps a bit of both?   If so, mark your calendar for the annual American Heart Walk coming up on Nov. 1.

Teams representing Sam Houston State University are now being recruited for the 2003-04 Walker County Division American Heart Walk, and the deadline is just a couple of weeks away.

Teams need to be in place by Sept. 26 so that captains will have time to distribute materials to their members for the collection of pledges before the date of the walk.

The walk will be held at Bowers Stadium with a route to go through the Sam Houston State campus, down Bearkat Boulevard, and back to the stadium.  It's a four-mile route with a stopping point at the stadium after two miles.

Each year the university has been well represented by organizations and individuals, and the SHSU Staff Team has been recognized for raising the most money for the event for the past two years.

Teams can be comprised of faculty, staff, students, alumni, or a combination of any of the groups.  Those who are interested in forming a team or serving as team captains should contact Maggie Babcock, special events coordinator at SHSU, by e-mail or by calling ext. 43415.

"This is a great way to show support for the community," said Babcock.

"The event increases awareness of heart disease and stroke," she said, "and it celebrates and honors survivors and memorializes those who have died from related health conditions."

The American Heart Walk raises funds to support lifesaving research, programs and education.  It also helps people take the first steps toward a heart-healthy lifestyle by becoming more physically active.  This year more than 500,000 people nation wide are expected to participate by walking, serving or donating to the American Heart Walk.
