SHSU Update for Week of Jan. 19

Jumbo Dogs and Couch Potatoes

The Sam Houston State men's basketball team is off to their best start ever in the Southland Conference, and a number of special promotions and activities promise a hot time at Johnson Coliseum for each game during the remainder of the season.

The two most popular sports promotions ever tried at SHSU--all you can eat 25 cent jumbo hot dogs, and the couch potato spectator section-- are both scheduled for Thursday's (Jan. 23) men's and women's games against Louisiana-Monroe. The women play at 5:30, and the men at about 7:45.

Couch potato nights are also scheduled on Feb. 13, 17, and March 5, and the 25 cent jumbo hot dogs, sponsored by the Department of Recreational Sports, return for the Feb. 13 game against Southwest Texas.

Students who would like to participate in the couch potato seating, which was used previously for football and will be tried this year for the first time in basketball, should pick up tickets at the Bowers Stadium Field House.

Other attractions which will add interest to the basketball games include performances at halftime and during game breaks by the award-winning Orange Pride dance group and parking lot golf cart shuttle service chauffeured by Charles Johnson and Ellery Stevenson.

The shuttles will be available for fans who may have physical limitations, young children, or who would just like a ride from Charles or Ellery.

There will also be special halftime shows, a television game Feb. 17, and a possible Southland Conference playoff game March 10 if the Bearkats finish the season as one of the top teams.

SHSU students, faculty and staff are admitted free to basketball games by showing their ID. Ticket prices are $6 for adults and $3 for those 17 and under.

Muller Elected Agricultural Superintendent

Joe Muller, associate professor of agricultural sciences at Sam Houston State University, has been elected to serve a three-year term as superintendent of the National Future Farmers of America Agricultural Mechanics Career Development Event.

As superintendent, Muller will coordinate committee efforts in acquisition of supplies and equipment, assembling a panel of judges, development of the exam, and coordinating all other components of the competitive event held each November at the National FFA Convention in Louisville, Ky.

Teams of FFA students representing all 50 states, as well as Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, are eligible to participate in the event once they have advanced through district, area and state competitions. Muller has served on the committee since 1986, and has served as associate superintendent for the past four years.

Writing Center Expands Hours

In response to student requests for weekend hours, the Sam Houston Writing Center will be open on Sundays from 2 to 7 p.m. The hours are in addition to the original hours of 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Friday.

The Writing Center is located in Wilson 114. Tutors are available to help students with drafts of assignments. Members of the Center also go to classrooms to discuss writing. They have presented programs on analytical writing, grant writing, incorporating quotes and source material, appropriate documentation and sentence styles, and basic grammar reviews.

The Center also offers help to faculty members by copy-editing or proofreading manuscripts and proposals.

For more information about the Center call 936.294.3680 or see the Center's Web page.

Counseling Center Offers Spring Programs

The Counseling Center will sponsor a number of group meetings and workshops for Sam Houston State University students during the spring semester. The programs are provided to students at no charge.

Groups will include: stress and anxiety management, depression management, anger management, child abuse support, new directions, women's issues, sexual assault support, and nontraditional students.

Workshops will include: Decreasing Test Anxiety; Anger, Anxiety and Stress Management; Finding Your Way--Identity Exploration and Choosing a College Major; Like the Way You Look--Body Image and Eating Issues; Express Yourself--Assertiveness and Self-Esteem; and How Do I Know It's Love--Exploring Healthy Relationships.

Students interested in joining a group should have their counselor sign them up. Students who do not have counselors should make an appointment for an intake with the group therapist at the Center.

Students who are interested in attending a workshop do not need an intake. They can call or stop by the Counseling Center to sign-up and reserve a spot.

The Counseling Center's hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For an appointment, stop by the Center or call 936.294.1720. For more information visit the Counseling Center Web page.

Free Leadership Conference Available to Students

The Department of Student Activities will host "The Leadership Challenge 2003" on Jan. 31-Feb. 1.

This free, interactive conference aims to promote leadership skills in students while giving them a chance to interact with other students across campus.

The idea for the conference was derived from the book "The Leadership Challenge," which concentrates on five principles---challenging the process, inspiring a shared vision, enabling others to act, modeling the way, and encouraging the heart. The workshops are modeled after the basic principles that the authors found in good leaders around the world.

The conference was started three years ago by SHSU Student Activities Program Coordinator Amber Van Roekel and Assistant Director Carlton Green, along with former Program Coordinator Richard Masterson. It has grown each year and is considered very successful by the personnel in the Department of Student Activities.

Students who participate will enjoy free food, interactive workshops featuring guest speakers from across the university, Huntsville and surrounding communities, and giveaways.

Interested students can pick up a registration form at the Department of Student Activities office in suite 328 of the Lowman Student Center. For more information call 936.294.3861.
