Muehsam Named Graduate Dean
Mitchell
J. Muehsam, associate dean and coordinator of graduate studies for the College
of Business Administration at Sam Houston State University, will have university-wide
responsibilities in that area beginning next fall.
David Payne, vice president for Academic Affairs, announced Wednesday that
Muehsam will become dean of graduate studies and associate vice president
for academic affairs. Don Bumpass, who served in a three-fourths capacity
in the graduate studies area, returns to teaching full time in the College
of Business Administration.
"I'm looking forward to the opportunity to work more closely with the entire
university community," said Muehsam, who will be assigned full time in his
new duties.
"Graduate programs have become of great importance at Sam Houston State
University, and I am excited to be able to work toward increasing their enrollments
and recognition."
In addition, Muehsam will have oversight and coordination responsibilities
for the accreditation process of the Southern Association of Colleges and
Schools (SACS).
Muehsam has been employed at Sam Houston State for 14 years, including
eight in his present position. He received his doctorate in statistics from
Texas A&M University, and specializes in experimental design, questionnaire
construction and statistical sampling.
He is co-founder and former president of Tourism & More Consulting
Services, and has served as a consultant for national governments, county
and city governments in the United States, and private and public concerns.
He has applied his statistical expertise to a wide array of projects to
include economic impact studies, market research analysis, impact of NAFTA
on Mexican custom brokers, tourism assessments, and political polling.
Bumpass, who has taught at Sam Houston State for 11 years, directed the
Office of Graduate Studies on half-time assignment since 1995, and three-fourths
time for the past two years.
In the past five years, graduate credit hours have increased at an annual
rate of 13 per cent and enrollment at 7.2 per cent annually. The university
now has doctorates in Criminal Justice, Educational Leadership, Forensic
Psychology, and Counselor Education.
Under criteria of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching's
2000 report, Sam Houston State would rank in the prestigious Doctoral/Research
Universities-Intensive category. This ranking is not official because the
foundation releases its report every five years.
