Museum Web Has New Name, New Look
In a business where history and tradition
are not only priorities, they are also sanctified, the Sam Houston Memorial
Museum is not letting "the old ways" keep them out
of the 21st century.
Taking advantage of the new top level domains created for internet users
last year, the museum now has a new online look and a new web address--- www.SamHouston.Memorial.Museum.
The new online address became official a few weeks ago, after months of planning.
"We heard that the new 'dot museum' address was going to be available for us
last year," said David Wight, curator of exhibits and website operator.
After requesting to be put on a waiting list to receive the new name, Wight
checked back with the domain owners who are located in Belgium, and found out
the request had somehow gotten lost.
However, Wight made another request, and with the help of the SHSU Computer
Services Department, the new address became a reality last month.
Wight had also been in the process of updating the museum's web site.
"I wanted to design the new page so that it would be easy for visitors to maneuver
through and locate information," said Wight.
The site features news and information about special events on the main page,
as well as menus which lead to a museum calendar, visitor information, information
on Sam Houston's life, education programs, Sam Houston Folk Festival information,
a virtual tour of the museum and grounds, information on becoming a member
of the Friends of the Museum, and a category called "Fun Stuff," which features
such items as Houston family recipes and a family album.
