Physics Prof Receives Grant
To Research In Italy
C. Renee James, assistant professor of physics at SHSU,
has been awarded a grant from the American Association for
the Advancement of Science. The Women’s International
Science Collaboration grant will allow her to perform research
at the Rome Astronomical Observatory in Italy from Dec. 13
to Jan. 5.
While in Rome, James will begin collaborating with several
members of the Rome Observatory to determine the chemical
compositions and the motions of stars in the Carina dwarf
spheroidal galaxy, a companion of the Milky Way.
This work will pave the way to a better understanding of the
formation and evolution of the Milky Way and of the material
universe as a whole.
James’ proposal was one of over 300 submitted for this
program, from which only 50 received funding.

Dining Facility Name Contest
Narrows To Three
In early October, SHSU students submitted 174 possible names
for the new south side Dining Facility, which were voted on
online by students, staff and faculty Oct. 20 – 21.
Bearkat Café, Eat 'em up Kafe, and SouthPaw were the
three names that garnered the most student votes and were
presented to a panel of nine students, faculty and staff.
The panel agreed with the student vote, and that name has
been submitted to the Board of Regents for approval. The official
name of the Dining Facility will be announced on Nov. 21 after
the Board of Regents quarterly meeting.
The students who submitted the finalist names include Barbara
Roberts, Andy DiMambro, Jessica Gallow, Jason Plotkin, and
Kara-Lea Roberts.
The student(s) who submitted the winning name will receive
$100 Bearkat Express and the student(s) who submitted the
other two finalist names will each win $50 Bearkat Express.
If more than one student has submitted the winning name, the
prize will be divided among the winners.
Once the name is official, the winners will receive their
prize.

Exhibit Opens Monday In Gaddis
Geeslin Gallery
The
works of Marie-Laure Ilie, Vince Koloski and Brenna Manuel
will be on exhibit in the SHSU Gaddis Geeslin Gallery from
Nov. 3-28. A reception will be held on Thursday (Nov. 6),
from 5-7 p.m., and will feature Ilie giving a brief talk about
her art.
A native of Paris, France, Ilie, a textile artist, is a Sorbonne
graduate and a former Fulbright travel grant recipient. Ilie’s
art can be described as avant-garde experiments with organza
and transparent nylon. Fabric is the medium of choice in her
search for reinterpretations of light and space.
This exhibit also reflects her interest in ancient Greek statues.
Her robed figures are re-imaged on fabric, re-manipulated
with draping and woven with transparent effects to create
a collection of sensual mixed-media embodiments.
Koloski, of San Francisco, Calif., has been creating light-based
work for 24 years.
“I work with light because of its emotional and symbolic
power. It has a purity that is unmatched by any other energy
or material,” Koloski said.
His neon sculptures combine glyphic or alphanumeric forms
and the symbolism of light. Koloski’s use of electricity
and advanced technologies has been described as creating a
powerful iconic presence that appeals to both the conscious
and subconscious yearnings.
Manuel received her Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture,
and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, N.Y. Her artwork
is a display of the objects and materials that can be found
in every day life, arranged in a matter that reflects a natural
beauty.
“I follow my instincts and create arrangements of stacks,
rows and piles of things that I like,” Manuel said.
Plant lights, masking tape, torn sheets and paper bags are
transformed into glowing assemblages that highlight the beauty
of very ordinary things.
The Gaddis Geeslin Gallery is open Monday through Friday,
from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

UIL Conference
To Draw Large Student Crowd
Approximately 1,000 to 1,300 students from school districts
throughout Central and Southeast Texas will be on the SHSU
campus on Saturday (Nov. 8) for the University Interscholastic
League Student Activity Conference.
The event, sponsored by the university, will acquaint students
and coaches with the nature and rules of the UIL academic
contests in approximately 15 different disciplines.
The conference will begin at 9 a.m. and will end at 1:30 p.m.
Students in Debi Hatton’s speech communications class,
“directing speech activities,” have been helping
build on the theme “Cruising Around The World”
for the conference.
“We’re looking at making signs (for the buildings
where sessions will be held) for Australia, Africa and South
America to help the students navigate around the campus (for
their sessions) and maybe learn about the campus too,”
said Gabby Moore, public relations representative for the
event.
SAM Center To Offer Grad School
Insight
The SAM Center will offer a program called Grad School Night
on Tuesday (Nov. 4) at 5 p.m.
This program will provide any student with all they need to
know about the process of applying to graduate school, according
to Bernice Strauss, SAM Center director of academic support
programs.
Students will receive a time line of when to undertake specific
tasks, and representatives from Financial Aid and various
graduate programs will be available for questions.
“Come find out if you are grad school material and how
to successfully apply to your particular program,” Strauss
said.
For more information, call the SAM
Center at 936.294.4444.
