Education Group Donates
Display Case To TEC

Education and Applied Sciences dean
Genevieve Brown (second from left) accepts the donated
display case. From left are Dr. Sharon Lynch, president;
Brown; Angie Sutton, vice president for programs and services;
and Cynthia Simpson, immediate past president and affiliate
representative to the Texas AEYC board of directors. |
A plate collection and replicas of gifts from the “father
of kindergarten” are on display on the first floor of
the Teacher Education Center thanks to the donation of a display
case by the Sam Houston Association for the Education of Young
Children.
The case, dedicated on Nov. 1, was donated to highlight the
accomplishments of the early childhood education program at
SHSU, SHAEYC and faculty in the early childhood education,
according to Laverne Warner, early childhood education professor.
SHAEYC purchased the case specifically to display a UNICEF
plate collection of children around the world, said Warner,
who was a SHAEYC founding member in 1987 and currently serves
as the group’s vice president for membership and treasurer.
“It started because I donated the plates to the organization
with the thought that they might use them as door prizes,”
she said, “but the board decided they wanted to keep
the collection, and so the issue came up that they didn’t
have a place to house them.”
In addition to the plates, which will be a permanent fixture
in the case, replicas of Froebel Gifts, which were teaching
materials from the 1800s developed by the “father of
kindergarten,” as well as publications by faculty members,
are currently being displayed.
