SHSU Update For Week Of Oct. 12
Physics Prof Receives $96,000
Grant
SHSU physics professor Barry Friedman and California State
University-Northridge physics professor Donna Sheng have been
awarded a three-year research grant by the National Science
Foundation.
The grant, which will bring $96,000 to SHSU, will aid in the
research of the application and development of novel theoretical
and computational approaches to strongly correlated semiconductor
systems.
Semiconductor physics is present everywhere in modern technology.
For example, the transistors used in personal computers are
an application of semiconductor physics.
The research done in the project could lead to novel semiconductor
devices, according to Friedman.
He, and several SHSU undergraduate physics majors, will apply
state-of-the-art computational methods to try to gain insight
into novel semiconductor systems.
Sheng is the principal investigator in the research, and Friedman
is the co-principal investigator.
During the last 14 years in the physics department, Friedman
has worked on a number of areas of theoretical and computational
solid-state physics. He has spent two years in Japan, first
on leave in 1990 as a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science
Fellow and second on sabbatical in 1999 as a National Science
Foundation visiting scientist.

Rec Sports To Deal Fall Poker
Walk Thursday
Students, faculty and staff are invited to put their best
hand, and foot, forward at the fall Poker Walk on Thursday
(Oct. 16), from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Poker Walk, designed to promote both fitness and fun,
is a 10-15 minute walk through the campus, picking up cards
from "casinos" along the way.
SHSU departments can pre-register as a team to enter two contests.
A traveling trophy will be awarded to the department that
displays the most energy, spirit and enthusiasm in the "High
Roller Challenge," and the "Maverick Award"
will be awarded to the best single hand from all department
entries.
Departments must pre-register to be eligible for these contests,
and the pre-registration deadline is 3 p.m. Monday (Oct. 13).
All other participants can sign-up at the Rec. Sports tent,
where the walk will begin, in the Lowman Student Center Mall
Area.
The bi-annual Poker Walk is sponsored by Recreational Sports,
the Barnes and Noble’s University Bookstore, the Dean
of Students Office, the Student Government Association and
Program Council.

Military Science To Run Football
For SFA Game
ROTC cadets from Sam Houston State University and Stephen
F. Austin will participate in the traditional running of the
football Wednesday and Thursday (Oct. 15-16).
The annual event brings the game football from Nacogdoches
to Huntsville, or vice versa, for the Battle of the Piney
Woods.
“It’s promoting the rivalry,” said Major
Christopher Wooten, military science recruiting operations
officer. “It’s one aspect of leadership that we’re
about—physical fitness.”
The run will begin Wednesday morning when ROTC cadets from
SFA will begin running with the football in a relay-style
manner.
On the second day, halfway to Huntsville, the cadets will
pass the football off to ROTC cadets from SHSU, who will then
bring the ball into the stadium for the beginning of the game.
All of the cadets volunteer to participate in the run.
“It’s 110 miles, so we do about 55 miles each
day. We do about 11 legs and assign each person five miles—each
cadet,” Wooten said. “We start one morning, and
end it on the first day; then we meet back up on the second
day, in the morning, and then continue on in the run. Then
we take the football at the end of the second day and run
it into the stadium.”

SHSU ‘Fires Up’ For
SFA
SHSU students and faculty are gearing up for this year’s
battle between SHSU and SFA. The university is holding several
events to promote spirit for the rival game throughout the
week in what the university is calling Operation Orange.
On Monday (Oct. 13), Orange Attack, a new traditional pep
rally, will kick off the series of events being held throughout
the week, with participants gathering in front of the Alumni
Fountain at 11:30 a.m. and marching to the Bernard G. Johnson
Coliseum in a large group.
Orange Attack activities include speakers; a “most spirited
organization” award, which will include a $250 prize;
a “second most spirited organization” award, which
will include a $150 prize; and T-shirt and prize give-aways.
Another event, Firefest, is the annual event held to help
students prepare for the Battle of the Piney Woods. Firefest
will be held on Intramural Field No. 2 Wednesday and will
kick-off at 8 p.m.
Events for Firefest will include inflatable games, a car bash,
a bonfire, free food, free drinks, and giveaways for everyone
in attendance.
The football team members, SHSU band, Sammy and Samantha Bearkat,
cheerleaders and the Orange Pride dance team will all be present
to assist with the Firefest festivities.
The Kat Kall begins at 9 p.m., and a firework display beginning
at 9:30 p.m. will conclude the night’s festivities.
Other events held for students during “rival week”
include Operation AXE the JACKS, on Thursday at 12 p.m. in
the LSC Mall Area and a pre-game tailgate party, also on Thursday,
which begins at 5 p.m.

SHSU Seeks Photo IDs For Anniversary
Celebration
One of the early steps in preparation for Sam Houston State
University's 125th Anniversary celebration during 2004 will
be an old photo showing, scheduled for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct.
29 at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum's Walker Education Center.
Some of the best photos from the SHSU archives will be displayed
in the hope that university and community old-timers can provide
details relating to the photos. Anyone who would like to loan
old photos that can be copied and returned are also welcome
and should bring them to the event.
“This is one of our first events as we begin to plan
our celebration of Sam Houston State's 125th Anniversary,"
said Nancy Sears, event coordinator. "The photos will
be used on the university Web site, in displays throughout
Huntsville, and perhaps in the special edition 'coffee table'
book that we plan to publish.
“Institutional and town memories can help us focus on
what's special about Sam Houston State and its locale,"
said Sears. "We invite all who are interested to join
us for refreshments and a trip down memory lane."

SAM Center To Host Grad School
Night Monday
The Student Advising and Mentoring Center will sponsor Grad
School Night, a program for any student considering graduate
school, on Oct. 13 at 5 p.m. in the SAM Center, in Academic
Building 4 Room 210.
The program will offer a time line for the application process
and graduate students from a range of departments will be
available to answer questions about what graduate school is
like and how to apply.

Photography Profs Display Works
Through Oct. 17
 Professors
in the photography department will be displaying and selling
some of their works through Oct. 17 in the Lowman Student
Center gallery.
An opening ceremony for the Photo Faculty Exhibition, featuring
pictures by Emmett Jackson, Jack Barnosky, Tom Seifert and
Jim Paster, will be held on Tuesday (Oct. 14) from 5-7 p.m.
in the LSC Gallery.
Refreshments will be served at the opening.

Sutherland To Bring
Clean Comedy To Campus
It will be all fun and games on Friday (Oct. 17) when Program
Council brings comedian Buzz Sutherland to the Lowman Student
Center Kat Klub for P.C. ComicView, beginning at 8 p.m.
Sutherland, who travels the country bringing smiles to the
faces of college students and corporate professionals alike,
is the original creator of the famous "DuckJob"
sound clip that has been passed and posted around the globe
in e-mails, Web sites and forums.
The five-time winner of the National Association for Campus
Activities’ Comedian of the Year Award and Campus Activities
Magazine's 2001 Comedian of the Year also holds the titles
of the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities’
2000 Comedian and Entertainer of the Year, as well as Campus
Activities' Today Magazine's 2001 Comedian of the Year.
The St. Louis Post Dispatch has described Sutherland's show
as "98-percent clean and 100-percent funny."

Faculty Musicians To Perform
Chamber Recital
The SHSU Faculty Woodwind Quintet will present a chamber
music recital on Oct. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall.
The group consists of Kathy Daniel, flute; Spring Hill, oboe;
Patricia Card, clarinet; Scott Phillips, bassoon; and Peggy
DeMers, horn; with guest artist Jay Whatley, piano.
Music to be performed includes Suite for Woodwind Quintet
by Fisher Tull (1934-94), a trio for flute, clarinet and bassoon
by Francois Devienne (1759-1803), Concertino by Ernest Bloch
(1880-1959) for flute, clarinet and piano and a recently discovered
woodwind quintet by Sir Malcolm Arnold (b. 1921).
