SHSU Update For Week of Oct. 26
'Not About Nightingales Opens
Wednesday
The SHSU department of theatre and dance will tell the stories
of several inmates in an American prison during the 30s in
its production of Tennessee Willams' "Not About Nightingales."
A secret love and inmate/guard relations are two of the plotlines
of the controversial play inspired by a Pennsylvania prison
scandal that shocked the nation with the horrific treatment
of prisoners who organized a hunger strike in 1938.
The play will be shown Wednesday (Oct. 29), through Saturday
at 8 p.m., with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, in the University
Theatre Center. The play will also be the 2003-2004 entry
into Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, a nation-wide
college competition set to begin on Nov. 8 at the University
of Texas in Tyler.
SHSU's production of the Tony Award-winning play will be directed
by musical theatre alumnus Patrick Pearson.
Tickets are $10 general admission and $8 for SHSU students,
faculty, staff and senior citizens. Group rates are also available.
Because of adult language and content, the play is not recommended
for children.
To reserve tickets, call the University Theatre Center Box
Office at 936.294.1339.

Slam Poetry Night To Be Held
Wednesday
Poet Jason Carney will share his perceptions on tolerance, respect
and acceptance through his works during the P.C. Slam Poetry
Night, sponsored by Program Council. The event will be held
on Wednesday (Oct. 29) at 7 p.m. in the Old Main Pit.
Author of the book "Flesh is the Only Lucid Language"
and a nationally recognized performer at colleges, youth centers
and high schools, Carney has also appeared at universities across
the country, as well as on HBO's "Russell Simmons presents
Def Poetry."
Carney, who has been called one of the brightest, most insightful
performance poets in the nation, uses his poetry to speak out
to the world against the very troubled actions and views he
once held.
Molding truth from a collage of images that he weaves with tactical
precision and conviction, he pays homage to the richness of
his southern heritage while managing to transcend stereotypes.
