SHSU To 'Attack' Coliseum For SFA Pep Rally

Orange attack logoStudents, faculty and staff are encouraged to “attack” the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum on Oct. 13 for “Orange Attack.”

The pep rally, which will be a new tradition, will kick off a series of events to being held throughout the week to “get students pumped up” for the Oct. 16 football game against rival Stephen F. Austin State. This year’s game will be televised on Fox Sports Net.

“It’s an attempt for the university to encourage all aspects of student life and get them motivated for the game against SFA,” said Brandon Cooper, student coordinator for Student Activities. “One of our main goals is to get the university as a whole to do something.”

Participants will gather in front of the Alumni Fountain at 11:30 a.m. and will march to the coliseum in a large group.

“We will march to the coliseum, where the pep rally will ensue with Dr. (James) Gaertner speaking; Dr. (Thelma) Douglass speaking; Bobby Williams, the athletics director, speaking; and some of the football team, maybe the captain,” Cooper said. “We’ll have some cheers and the Orange Pride dance team.”

The most spirited organization will be awarded a $250 prize and the second most spirited organization will be awarded a $150 prize. In addition, the president and vice presidents will be giving away T-shirts and other prizes.

In addition, university officials are allowing faculty to release classes early for the event.

“I think we need to engage in more activities to increase school spirit generally and ask you to inform your chairs, and for them to inform their faculty, that I am authorizing this early release from the 11:00 class and late arrival for the 12:00 class if individual faculty members choose to do so,” said David Payne, vice president for student services in an e-mail to administrators.

Orange Attack is sponsored by the offices of the President and Vice President for Student Services, as well as the Office of Student Activities.

Other activities planned for the week include Operation Orange, also beginning Monday; Firefest, on Oct. 15 at 8 p.m. at Intramural Field No. 3; and Operation Axe The Jacks on Thursday at noon in the LSC Mall area.
