SHSU Gets 'Star Spangled' For Parents’ Weekend

It will be a star-spangled weekend at SHSU on Oct. 3-4 for this year’s Parents' Weekend, sponsored by the Dean of Students’ Office and the Parents’ Association.

Activities will kick off on Friday with Heart of a Champion Leadership reception, which honors students who have achieved recognition on a local, state or national level in affiliation with the Division of Student Services at SHSU. The reception will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the LSC Ballroom.

At 7 p.m., the Bearkat soccer team takes on Louisiana-Monroe at Pritchett Field, followed by a special presentation of ‘Anything Goes’ by the theatre department, at 8 p.m. on the University Theatre Center’s Mainstage. Tickets are $12 for general admission and $10 for all students, faculty and staff and senior citizens.

Also on Friday, parents will have the opportunity to check out the new Raven Nest Golf Course from 1:30-5 p.m. with a special $25 rate, which includes green fees and cart rental.

On Saturday, Parents’ Weekend registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in the LSC Main Lobby, and will last until noon, followed by a full day of activities, including coffee with the administrators, a spinning and weaving demonstration, tours of Austin Hall and Peabody Library, a visit to the Sam Houston Memorial Museum and grounds and organization and department open houses and activities.

Also on Saturday, the annual Parents’ Association meeting will be held at 10:30 a.m. in LSC Room 320, assistant professor of history Bernadette Pruitt will speak on “SHSU and the Civil Rights Movement” from 1-2 p.m. in LSC Room 320 and the newly-wed game-style Generation Gap game will be held from 2-3:30 p.m. in the LSC Theater.

This year, Parents' Weekend will again be held in conjunction with Huntsville's 29th Annual Fair on the Square in downtown Huntsville, just blocks from the SHSU campus. Approximately 350 arts, crafts and food booths will be set up from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and there will be continuous live entertainment throughout the day.

That night, the Bearkats on Broadway Dinner will be held, from 5:30-7 p.m. in the LSC Ballroom. After dinner, there will be a SHSU Orchestra Concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Criminal Justice Center Killinger Auditorium, and the second Parents’ Weekend presentation of “Anything Goes” will be held at 8 p.m. on the University Theatre Center Mainstage.

Tickets for the dinner are free for the first 200 students on a meal plan who pick up tickets in Café Belvin by Sept. 30. Advance tickets may be purchased for $20, which includes the dinner and “Anything Goes;” $10 for the dinner only; and $10 for “Anything Goes” only. On-site tickets can be purchased, as well, for $12 for the dinner, if available; $10 for “Anything Goes;” and $4 for the orchestra concert.

The weekend will conclude on Sunday with a worship service at 10 a.m., followed by a second Bearkat Soccer game against Northwestern State, at 1 p.m. at Pritchett Field.
