Marketing Senior Wins National Competition
Amanda Gilbert used skills she learned in
her marketing classes to help her win a national contest.
Sam Houston State University senior Amanda M. Gilbert is
the newest videogame cheerleader for MLB SlugFest, a popular
baseball videogame and registered trade name of Midway Games,
Inc. Amanda and thousands of women from around the country
submitted entry videos to Midway's Nationwide Cheerleader
Tryouts for the chance to win appearances in Midway's video
sports games and $5,000 in prize money.
Amanda - the former trainer for her high school's varsity
baseball team - learned about the contest from a newspaper
article and used her technical knowledge of the game to craft
a winning message. Capitalizing on skills she learned in marketing
classes at SHSU's College of Business Administration, Amanda
filmed her entry on an empty baseball diamond where, dressed
casually in blue jeans and baseball cap, she humorously itemized
all the reasons why she could help Midway Games put real,
live fans in their virtual ballpark stands.
From more than 15,000 videos, Amanda was one of 25 semi-finalists
selected for the next round of competition - a live judging
event in Florida. There, a tough panel of judges consisting
of professional baseball players and talent scouts narrowed
the field to five finalists.
The cheerleader contest then went online to SlugFest videogame
fans, who cast electronic ballots during a three-week campaign.
Amanda's selection has garnered her, in addition to $5,000,
a slot on Midway Games' Cheerleader Calendar and the opportunity
to travel and participate in several promotional events.
A dedicated student, Amanda plans to use her prize money
to complete her education at SHSU's College of Business Administration.
When asked about her long-term plans, 1999's Miss Tomball
answered enthusiastically: a fulltime marketing position with
Midway Games!
