Emergency Response Exercise Scheduled

Sam Houston State University will conduct a test of its emergency response plan on Friday, March 7 beginning at 8:30 a.m.

The parts of the campus that will be involved will depend on the hypothetical emergency chosen by the Public Safety Office. James F. Gaertner, SHSU president, has asked supervisors to inform all employees about the exercise and encourage their participation.

At the conclusion of the exercise, K. Kyle Butler, special agent of the Federal Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and an expert in the field of emergency management, terrorist threats, and homeland security, will speak the Criminal Justice Center Killinger Auditorium.

Butler's presentation is scheduled for 11 a.m. Interested faculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend.

The university's emergency response plan designates a 14-member emergency response team, and these goals:

  • To coordinate the University's response to emergency and critical incidents involving students while paying special attention to the safety and security needs of members of the University community;
  • To offer counseling, guidance and appropriate support to members of the University community, their families and University care givers;
  • To use emergency and critical incidents, when appropriate in training, which may enhance the quality of life for all those touched by emergency and critical incidents.

Charles Tackett, director of the university police department, serves as the emergency response team coordinator. Anyone needing to report an incident or situation that might need emergency respone should contact the university police department dispatcher emergency number--294.1000.

Emergency response team members include the president, vice presidents, associate vice president for student services and dean of student life, directors of physical plant, public relations, residence life, counseling center, health center and food service, and safety office coordinator.

A copy of the emergency response plan is available in Adobe format online, select ERP Manual.
