It's Folk Festival Time--Food, Fun, Entertainment
and More
It's time again for the annual General Sam
Houston Folk Festival and all the
festivities it brings to town.
The festival will be held on the grounds of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum
Complex from Friday (May 2) through Sunday (May 4). Times are 9 a. m. to
10 p. m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 5 p. m. Sunday.
University faculty, staff and students are invited to step across Sam Houston
Avenue and step into the history the 1850s. That is when Sam Houston and
his wife Margaret and their children lived in the Woodland Home which is
still on the grounds of their original plantation property.
Folk festival visitors can see dozens of demonstrators, enjoy theater groups,
listen to old-time music, and enjoy delicious food and drinks. Special country
singers perform throughout each of the three days with the top acts scheduled
Friday and Saturday night.
On Saturday at 11 a.m. there will be a parade of historic characters, a
Raven Rangers muster at 5 p. m. Saturday, and a gospel show at 11 a.m. Sunday.
Some of the groups scheduled to perform are Shorty Long, Back at the Ranch,
Brennen Leigh, Ben Bell, Wilders, Pine Island Station, Sweet Song String
Band and the Karl Shiflet and Big Country Show.
Tickets will be available at the gate and are $3 for children and $7 for
adults.
Sam Houston students can get in free by volunteering to work a two-hour
shift in one of a dozen entertaining spots. Several SHSU faculty members
are giving assignments related to the festival.
