SHSU
Update For Week Of Nov. 16
SHSU Company To Present
Dance Spectrum
The SHSU department of theatre and dance’s student
company, SHSU Dance Company, will present Dance Spectrum in
Concert Thursday through Saturday (Nov. 20-22) on the University
Theatre Center Mainstage. Shows begin at 8 p.m. nightly, with
a 2 p.m. matinee performance on Saturday.
Choreographers Jennifer Pontius, Cindy Gratz, Kista Tucker,
Melissa Wynn and Jonathan Charles, all members of the SHSU
dance faculty, will be presenting works in ballet, modern,
jazz and contemporary dance forms.
Dance Spectrum in Concert is a presentation of an array of
dance forms and themes showcasing the talent of the dance
program. Entertaining, engaging, and stimulating, this concert
will offer something for everyone, according to Tiffany Nirider,
graduate teaching assistant and spectrum producer.
Ensemble!, choreographed by Jennifer Pontius, celebrates the
traditions of ballet interwoven with familiar motifs of character
dance. Driven by the lively strains of The Chieftains’
The Fiddling Ladies, the 11 dancers progress from a restrained
and formal unison, through myriad interactions that culminate
in a joyous tapestry of dancing.
After Images is a reconstruction of a 1992 award-winning piece
by Cindy Gratz. It is a compelling work that investigates
stages of recovery for adult survivors of childhood sexual
abuse.
Kista Tucker will be presenting two pieces in the performance.
The first is The Korean War, Forgotten No More: Walking, Battle,
Dead and Wounded, also known as the Korean War Veterans Memorial
Project. This SHSU performance will depict the first three
scenes of the work in progress. The project, made possible
through a $26,500 developmental grant awarded to Tucker by
SHSU’s Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, will
premiere as a full work June 19, 2004, at the Laban/Bartenieff
Institute of Movement Studies’ Biennial Conference in
Long Beach, Calif.
Tucker’s second piece, Three Faces of Woman: Determined,
Understanding, Passionate, depicts three of the many aspects
of a woman’s nature. Yann Tiersen, recently known for
his music in the movie, Amélie, composed the music.
Choreographer Melissa Wynn combines elements of text, dramatic
theatre, video and set design to create a complete environment
that extends much beyond the scope of conventional modern
dance in Dreams of X Within the Time and Space Continuum,
which takes an abstract look at the absurdity and oddity of
human interactions within the timings of their occurrences.
Jonathan Charles’ Red Tango is a tribute to the tango,
Argentina’s second national anthem. Forget the mannered
ballroom dancing image, this tango is the source of real roots
music—very rhythmic and passionate. This piece is the
product and a tribute to the men dancing it and for that matter,
a tribute to male dancers everywhere.
Tickets for Dance Spectrum are $10 general admission and $8
with SHSU or senior citizen ID. For more information, call
936.294.1875 or 936.294.3988.

Rec Sports To Host Turkey
Trot Nov. 24
You don't have to walk far; you don't have to walk fast.
In the Turkey Trot you could be the winner even if you cross
the finish line last.
The Turkey Trot, a prediction walk and food drive sponsored
by Recreational Sports and Golden Key International Honour
Society, will be held on Nov. 24, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The event will start and finish in the LSC Mall Area and is
open to all faculty, staff and students.
In a prediction walk the participant predicts, before the
event begins, how long it will take to walk the course. The
winner is the person who crosses the finish line closest to
the predicted time.
“This is a very non-competitive atmosphere,” said
Tina DeAses, Recreational Sports wellness director. “Participants
can trot or walk at their own pace and still win.
“It is a great opportunity to enjoy the beautiful Sam
Houston State University campus, spend some time ‘outside
of the office’ with your fellow co-workers and win an
entire Thanksgiving dinner - turkey included,” she said.
First place receives a turkey, bag of potatoes, can of cranberries
and pumpkin pie; second place receives a ham, yams and box
of instant stuffing; and third place receives a box of instant
mashed potatoes and a can of pumpkin filling.
The registration fee is two non-perishable food items or $1
and will benefit the area food bank.
For more information, please contact DeAses at 936.294.1985
or rca_cnh@shsu.edu.

Astrophysicist To Explain
The Stars
The physics department and the SHSU Society of Physics Students
will host a public talk by astrophysicist J. Craig Wheeler
on Wednesday (Nov. 19), at 2 p.m. in Farrington Building Room
109.
Wheeler, who currently holds the Samuel T. and Fern Yanagisawa
Regents Professorship of Astronomy at the University of Texas
at Austin, will discuss supernovae and the catastrophic deaths
of massive stars, a topic for which Wheeler is one of the
world's leading experts, according to physics department chair
Rex Isham.
Specifically, he will discuss whether a star's magnetic field
and rotation rate help trigger certain types of supernovae,
the only remnants of which are rapidly rotating, compact stars
called pulsars. He will also explore the connection between
pulsars and the so-called "gamma ray bursters,"
mysterious objects which have attracted media attention in
the past few years because of their unpredictability and enormous
power output.
Although a weighty subject, Wheeler's many teaching awards
at UT Austin indicate that he can bring the universe down
to earth for the public,” Isham said.
The talk will last approximately an hour, and refreshments
will be served.

International Programs
To Distribute Study Abroad Info
The Office of International Programs will set up a "Study
Abroad" table and distribute information about scholarships,
as well as scholarship application forms, to students interested
in taking summer courses in foreign countries on Thursday
(Nov. 20), from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the LSC Mall Area.
The purpose of the event is to celebrate International Education
Week, designated as Nov. 17-21, and to raise awareness on
campus of the international student population, according
to Donna Rogers in the Office of International Programs.
Information will include courses led by some of our SHSU faculty
members, as well as courses sponsored by outside agencies
such as American Institute for Foreign Studies. Multicultural
and International Student Services, two Indian groups, the
International Hispanic Association, history professor Nick
Pappas, and English professor Christie Fox have signed up
to promote their programs and groups, as well as Grettle Payne
who has signed up to promote "Travel with Sam Houston"
through Continuing Education.
International Program staff members will be present to answer
general questions students may ask about participating in
study abroad, finding courses that are right for them and
scholarship eligibility.
International students will be present to talk to students
and to hand out promotional material, exhibit items from their
culture and sell finger foods traditional in their home countries.
Several international students will dress in attire from their
home countries, and other international students pass out
globe key chains.
There will also be an international display set up in the
Newton-Gresham Library during International Education Week.
“We would like to invite participation from the general
campus population by encouraging those who have traveled abroad
to wear T-shirts or other clothing they purchased in foreign
countries during their travels, and to join us in the Mall
Area, near the fountain, on Nov. 20 and share the details
of their experience abroad with other American students,”
Rogers said.
In case of rain, the event will be held in the LSC Atrium.
