Bearkats Planning Tourney Trip

Sam Houston State University's men's basketball team is going to the "Big Dance" for the first time ever, and even though the NCAA playoff game will be in the University of Florida's back yard, there will be a considerable contingent of Bearkats present.

SHSU has an initial allotment of 300 tickets, which are going fast, and may be able to get a few more. Tickets are $55 each and available while they last at the athletic department offices in the Bowers Stadium field house. Call 936.294.4205 for information.

There is a possibility that one or more busses will go, depending on ticket availability and how many people are willing to commit to the trip. Student activities is working with athletics to provide students with information about tickets, bus fares and hotel accommodations. Call 936.294.3861 for bus, ticket and hotel information.

In addition, the alumni relations office is working on a possible bus trip as well, pending the availability of tickets and commitments from enough riders to make the trip attractive. Kevin Hayes, director of alumni relations, said that he needs to have commitments by noon Tuesday to determine if a charter trip is feasible. Call 936.294.1841.

Hayes estimates that the bus trip will run $135 (if 50 people commit) to $225 (for 30 people). The hotel cost will be $73 for one night, and an additional $73 for Sunday's game, after the Bearkats beat the Gators and move on to the next round.

The student bus will be leaving Thursday, March 20th, at 6:30 p.m. from the Johnson Coliseum parking lot. The student group will stay over Friday night and return Saturday if the Bearkats should fail to accomplish the expected upset.
