125th Logo Unveiled, Web Site

The SHSU 125th Anniversary Steering Committee has unveiled
the official 125th logo and launched the anniversary Web site,
at www.shsu.edu/125.
The official logo will be used with all events in conjunction
with the anniversary celebration, and those who wish to use
the logo should seek approval from the President’s Office.
The committee also received commemorative lapel pins of the
logo at Monday’s meeting, and all participants in the
125th celebration events will receive a pin.
The anniversary Web site was created to provide information
surrounding all of the April and October events. The Web site
also contains the online history, latest news releases, anniversary
projects and an updated list of current events.

‘Mayhem’ To
Strike SHSU Wednesday
The Department of Recreational Sports and the Program Council
are teaming up to bring “mayhem” to SHSU.
Midnight Mayhem will be held on Wednesday (April 7) from 7
p.m. to midnight in the Health and Kinesiology Center.
This year’s event will include several new activities
and games to the line up, according to Megan Thomas, Rec Sports
graduate assistant.
Activities planned include dominoes, Texas hold 'em poker,
one-on-one basketball, a hot shot contest, inflatables, spades,
go fishing, and much more.
In addition to free food and drinks being served, students
will have the opportunity to win T-shirts, door prizes, textbooks
for a semester from the Barnes and Noble University Bookstore,
and one student will have the chance to win $500 by making
a half-court shot, as well as other prizes.
With over 800 participants last year, the event keeps getting
bigger and bigger every year, Thomas said.
“Rec Sports is known for the great special events on
this campus and this event will continue in that tradition,”
she said. “We will have a fun-filled night of games,
prizes, activities, and food that is sure to entertain everyone.”

Music Faculty To Play Brass
Recital
Five faculty members from the SHSU music department will
showcase their talents at the Faculty Brass Quintet Recital
on April 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall.
The recital is held every semester and Randy Adams, assistant
professor of trumpet and brass area coordinator, said he is
optimistic about the event.
“This recital will be fun for everyone,” Adams
said. “Past recitals have been great and I know this
one will be too.”
The quintet will play various pieces of music ranging from
John Lennon’s “Yesterday” to music composed
by Andre Preven and a Dixie-land piece written by Adams entitled
“Your Father’s Mustache.”
“We have music for serious music lovers and fun pieces
that everyone will know and enjoy,” Adams said. “This
is going to be a fun mix of very old pieces to newer ones.”
The event will feature Adams and Steve Warkentin playing trumpet,
Peggy Beners and Henry Howey playing the French horn, and
Robert Daniel playing the tuba.

Kat Klub To Host Texas Hold
‘Em Tourney
This isn’t your average game of poker; this is No
Limit Texas Hold ’em.
The Kat Klub is hosting the Bearkat Texas Hold ‘em Tournament,
similar to the popular tournament games on TV, on April 15
at 5 p.m.
The tournament is free to all students and faculty members
and will be split into different rounds with the final table
being played for the grand prize on April 29.
Gary Roark, SHSU recreation director, said the purpose of
the event is to bring people back into the LSC.
“Texas Hold ‘em is probably one of the hottest
things going on right now, and we want to offer that to the
students,” Roark said. “We want people to have
fun and enjoy the Kat Klub because this place is for the students.”
Roark also said players in the tournament will receive $1,000
in “play money” to use for the tournament, and
the blinds will go up every hour.
Participants for the event have the chance to compete for
many prizes throughout the evening but Roark said the grand
prize would have an estimated value of $400.
“The winner of the event will be able to have the Kat
Klub to themselves and 25 other people for four hours,”
said Roark, “but everything in the Kat Klub will be
turned on free mode allowing everyone inside to play whatever
they want to.”

Ceramic Artist To Be
Featured In Workshop, Lecture
Internationally-known ceramic artist Richard Notkin will
present a workshop and slide lecture on Monday and Tuesday
(April 5-6).
Workshop sessions will be held on Monday, from 9 a.m. to 12
p.m. and 1-4 p.m. and on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., all
in the Ceramics Studio, located in Art Building A Room 102.
There is a suggested contribution of $25 for Monday’s
workshop and $15 for Tuesday.
Notkin’s slide lecture will be held on Monday, at 5
p.m. in the Art Department Auditorium, in Art Building E.
There will also be a potluck lunch on Monday, from 12-1 p.m.,
in the lobby of the Ceramics Studio.
Notkin’s series of Yixing- (China) inspired teapots
and ceramic sculptures have been exhibited internationally
and are in numerous public and private collections, including
the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Smithsonian
Institution in Washington, D.C., the Victoria and Albert Museum
in London and the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park in Japan.
In addition, the full-time studio artist who lives and works
in Helena, Mont., has received three fellowships from the
National Endowment for the Arts, as well as fellowships from
the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and the Louis
Comfort Tiffany Foundation.

IT Brings Multimedia Circus
To SHSU
The department of academic instructional technology and
distance learning will sponsor a technology mini-conference
on Tuesday (April 6) from 1-4 p.m. and again on Wednesday
(April 7) from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center
Ballroom.
“The conference is geared towards faculty, but students
are, absolutely, welcome to attend,” said James Van
Roekel, director of the department of academic instructional
technology.
Several groups, including University Computer Services, Newton
Gresham Library, Criminal Justice and Radio and Television,
will demonstrate different technological applications available
on campus and how these tools are being used to create content.
