Guys And Dolls To Be Presented On Mainstage Theatre

The SHSU theatre department will present the musical “Guys and Dolls” Wednesday through Saturday (April 21-24) on the University Theatre Center’s Mainstage Theatre. Show times will be at 8 p.m. each evening, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday.

The musical, based on the book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, centers around the love of gambling and the gamble of love.

Nathan Detroit (Dylan Godwin), the operator of a renowned floating crap game, is trying to establish a place for his next game, while Adelaide (Holland Vavra), a chorus girl and his fiancé of 14 years, is trying to establish their wedding date.

In the meantime, love blossoms when Sky Masterson (David Deveau), a larger-than-life gambler and womanizer, woos the devout Sarah Brown (Heather Scheffel), a missionary, in order to win a bet he made with Nathan.

The musical is directed by theatre faculty member Maureen McIntyre, with Laura Avery-Hill as the musical director and conductor and Jonathan Charles as the choreographer. Senior theatre major Kacie Starr is the stage manager, theatre faculty member Don Childs designed the sets and lights, Kristina Hansen designed the costumes and junior theatre major William Burns is the sound designer.

Speaker, Quilt Promote Diversity Week

A human rights activist and an AIDS quilt will be part of the Office of Student Activities’ Diversity Week, being held this week (April 19-23).

On Monday, Elizabeth Birch will speak on gay and lesbian rights and how to further promote diversity in the community at 7:30 p.m. in the LSC Theater.

Birch served as the executive director of the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender advocacy organization for nearly 9 years.

Under her leadership, the institution more than quadrupled its membership to 500,000 and became known nation-wide for its professionalism and cutting-edge advocacy techniques. In addition, she built the organization from grassroots into the modern corporate model with a senior management team and 100-person staff.

Also throughout the week, the AIDS Memorial Quilt will be on display in the LSC Atrium, which is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

The AIDS quilt is a powerful reminder of the AIDS pandemic,” said Laura Springel, student coordinator for Student Activities. “More than 42,000 individual panels, each one commemorating the life of someone who has died of complications related to AIDS, have been sewn together by friends, lovers, and family members.”

The quilt includes contributions from all over the world, containing panels from Argentina, Aruba, Australia, Belgium, Romania, Uganda, South Africa and many other countries.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to remember and reflect upon the disease that has taken the lives of so many individuals from around the world,” Springel said.
