Spanish Prof
To Offer Class On ‘Native Americans’
Rafael Saumell-Munoz, associate professor of Spanish, will
offer a class on "Native-Americans and Afro-Hispanics
in Spanish-American Literature" under Spanish 470 during
the second summer session.
The class will focus on selected literature in the form of
poetry, short story, novel fragments and essays revolving
around the Native Americans of the Central and South Americas.
“We are talking about the people who are Maya, Aztecs,
Incas,” Saumell-Munoz said. “Peoples from the
former big empires in pre-colonial North and South America;
the Aztecs from Mexico, the Mayas from the region we call
Southern Mexico and Central America, meaning Yucatan, Mexico
and Guatemala, and the Incas from South America, like in Peru,
Ecuador, even to the north of Argentina.”
Afro-Hispanics refers to people of African descent or mulattos,
people of black and white ancestry, living in Hispanic countries.
Discussion will also include slavery in the Americas and the
descendants of former slaves.
Saumell-Munoz said this topic has not been taught at SHSU
during the 11 years he has been teaching here and is particularly
suited for students who are Spanish majors or minors.

Employee Scholarship
Application Due May 3
Applications for the President’s Employee Scholarship
Program for both summer sessions are due by May 3.
Forms should be submitted to the Human Resources Department,
Box 2356, Estill Building Room 334, and can be accessed online
at www.shsu.edu/~hrd_www/forms/PresidentsEmployeeScholarship.doc.
The scholarship is for full-time (1.0 FTE) benefits eligible
staff and faculty, through the rank of assistant professor,
who desire to take one class or one class and a lab at SHSU
(4 semester hours maximum).
Applicants must have a minimum of one year full-time continuous
employment at SHSU and have earned at least three semester
hours at SHSU with a minimum 2.0 grade point average.
Undergraduate students with a 2.5 GPA or greater will be given
first priority, and graduate students with a 3.5 GPA or greater
will be given second priority.
An employee’s GPA, length of employment and student
classification level are the primary consideration factors.

Puebla Study Abroad Meeting
To Be Held Tuesday
SHSU is again offering students a unique learning experience
through the Puebla Field School during the first summer session.
An orientation meeting for all participants, as well as those
interested in studying in Mexico, will be held on Tuesday
(April 27) from 5-6 p.m. in Evans Building Room 251.
SHSU professors Carolyn Robinson, Michael Henderson, Sanjay
Mehta, Kay Raymond and Frieda Koeninger will teach the courses
on the beautiful campus of the Universidad Iberoamericana
in Puebla, Mexico, Koeninger said.
Thirty-five students have signed up to attend courses in agriculture,
art, business and Spanish.
Pizzas and soft drinks will be served at the meeting, and
the sign-up deadline is April 28. For more formation, or to

Magazine Highlights Texas
Review, Quotes Ruffin
Sam Houston State University's “The Texas Review”
was one of 14 literary journals featured in a recent article
by literary agent Nat Sobel in Poets & Writers Magazine.
“The Texas Review” editor, Paul Ruffin, who is
also founder and director of the Texas Review Press, was quoted
along with editors from such prestigious publications as the
“Michigan Quarterly Review,” “Shenandoah”
(Washington and Lee University Review), “New Orleans
Review”, and “Confrontation.”
In the Sobel article Ruffin advised aspiring writers that
the opening scene of a story is the most important element
in it--"It is here that you snag an editor or he gets
away."
Ruffin also presented, in a colorful way, his opinion that
it is not necessary for an editor to read an entire manuscript
to know if it is good or not.
"I am of the opinion that 'One does not, after all, have
to devour the entire ox to know that the meat is tough...'"
Ruffin was awarded the title Distinguished Professor of English
last fall in recognition of his work to establish "The
Texas Review" and the Texas Review Press.

Theatre To Perform
‘30 Plays In 60 Minutes’
The SHSU theatre will go ‘bare’ for its production
of “30 Plays in 60 Minutes” on April 29-30. Barebones
Productions will be held at 8 p.m. on both days in the Showcase
Theatre in the University Theatre Center.
“Barebones is a production company that is student-run
and student-produced, and it is, as its name suggests, barebones,”
said assistant professor of theatre Penny Hasekoester. “There
are no special lighting effects; we use whatever is hung,
we use the UIL set pieces. It’s very simple in nature.”
The script, “30 Plays in 60 Minutes,” was put
together by the Neo-futurists, a Chicago-based ensemble of
writers, performers and directors founded in 1988. The plays
will be directed by junior theatre major Connor Bartley.
“Essentially they are very short scripts, some of them
are a minute and a half, some of them are two and three minutes,”
Hasekoester said. “The students performing basically
have a book of approximately 120 plays, and they selected
the 30.”
Tickets are free, but donations will be accepted at the door,
and the material is not appropriate for children.

LSC Offers More ‘Orange
Light Specials’
The Lowman Student Center will offer more “orange light
specials” this week in honor of SHSU’s 125th anniversary
celebration.
The Kat Klub will have happy hour, when all games can be played
for free with a valid SHSU identification card, on Monday
through Thursday from 4-6 p.m.
Other events include the Sammy Awards on April 28, at 7 p.m.
in the LSC Ballroom; Turner-Kawashima Photo Exhibit in the
LSC Art Gallery; and the Bearkat OneCard Office’s “Walk
In and Win” contest.
To participate in the Onecard contest, visit the OneCard Office
in LSC Suite 330 and be entered into a drawing for 1250 reward
points.

Fall Graduation
Registration Deadline Approaches
Students who anticipate graduating in December 2004, are
to file degree applications by April 26 in the Registar’s
Office. After this date, late fees will be assessed.
The Registrar’s Office is located on the third floor
of the Estill Building.
