Asian Police Studies Group to Convene at SHSU
The Criminal Justice Center at Sam Houston State University
will host the 5th Annual Conference of the Asian Association
of Police Studies from August 8 – August 12, 2004 in
the teaching amphitheatre of the Bill Blackwood Law Enforcement
Management Institute of Texas.
This conference, being held for the first time in the United
States, will convene policing scholars, researchers, and officials
from 10 countries to present new research and advance existing
research on policing and criminal justice in Asia.
"Sam Houston State University is especially proud to
welcome two high-ranking delegations to the conference: a
5-person delegation from the Philippine National Police; and
an 8-person delegation from the China Police Society, including
Liu Boxiang, secretary-general of China Police Society, who
will deliver the keynote address at the conference,"
said Richard Ward, dean of the College of Criminal Justice.
The AAPS Annual Conference is an established international
forum for the presentation and critical discussion of research
findings and applications by academics and practitioners.
Participants from the fields of law enforcement, private security,
crime, and victimization gather at this conference to exchange
their up-to-date research results with a goal toward advancing
police/security practice and research.
The theme for the conference this year is “Policing
the World: Asian Perspectives.” Papers introducing the
criminal justice systems and discussing issues related to
individual countries and regions are welcome.
"These panels will be invaluable for faculty who teach
comparative criminal justice systems," said Ward. "They
also provide a rare opportunity for criminal justice professionals
whose work involves cross-cultural interactions with counterparts
in the international arena."
Since its inception in 2000, AAPS has successfully held annual
conferences in Seoul, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and other regions.
All the conferences were academic in nature.
