SHSU
Update For Week Of Aug. 22
Health Center Relocates
To Estill Hall Parking Lot
Due to facility renovations, the SHSU Student Health Center
will be temporarily housed in modular buildings in the Estill
Hall parking lot, located behind the current facility, during
the fall semester.
The interior renovations are scheduled for completion by summer
2005, according to Health Center director Keith Lott.
“I eagerly anticipate having a facility that reflects
the quality of the services and programs that we provide to
the students,” Lott said. “The inconvenience of
moving and operating from a temporary location will be well
worth it on the day that we move back into a completely renovated
facility.”
Other than the relocation of the department, no major changes
to services are expected, Lott said.
During the summer, the air conditioning and heating system,
along with the ceiling and lighting, were replaced.

SHSU To Become Orbitz Affiliate
Sam Houston State will soon reap the benefits of online
travel booking without any cost to the person making a reservation.
Beginning Sept. 1, the SHSU Travel with SH office will officially
launch its affiliation with Orbitz.com, an online travel company.
Through the affiliation, the Travel with SH office will receive
a commission when a person books his/her travel from the Orbitz
Web site. In order for the university to receive commission,
however, the person purchasing the reservation must link to
Orbitz from the Travel at SH Web site.
By clicking on the link, found on the "travel
partners" page on the Travel
with SH Web site, “they know that you’ve come
from the Sam Houston page” and the university will receive
commission, according to Grettle Payne, Travel with SH coordinator.
Not only will SHSU receive commission for flights booked on
Orbitz, but hotels, car rentals and cruises.
“It will be the same as on the Orbitz site, but by using
our link, you are identified with SHSU, and we get that donation,”
Payne said.
One of the most important things for all alumni, students,
employees and friends to remember is that you get the same
service, the same price and the same options for no additional
charge, Payne said.
“The ticket costs you the same if you link from our
site to Orbitz or just go on your own to Orbitz.com,”
she said. “So, it's a wonderful way to make a contribution
without spending any extra money.”

125th Anniversary Bobble
Head Dolls Now Being Sold
The Barnes and Noble University Bookstore will be selling
Sammy the Bearkat bobble head dolls in honor of SHSU’s
125th anniversary.
The dolls are approximately 6.5 inches tall, wear an SHSU
jersey with 04 on the front, and have the 125th anniversary
logo in front.
They can be purchased for $14.98 while supplies last, according
to Keri Rogers, associate dean and director of the First Year
Experience program, who served on the memorabilia subcommittee
of the 125th anniversary steering committee.
Rogers said other universities have created bobble head dolls
from their mascots, and the memorabilia subcommittee thought
it was a good idea.
“My undergraduate institution had done them, and they
were so cute that I took the idea to the committee,”
she said. “We wanted to do something that the students
would like, that we could put in the bookstore and that was
affordable.”

SHSU Recruiting For 2004
Heart Walk
This year in Texas alone the American Heart Association will
spend more than $10 million on biomedical research in the
fight against heart disease and stroke. More than 2,600 Americans
die each day of cardiovascular disease, an average of one
death every 29 seconds, and account for an estimated 34 percent
of all deaths in Walker County alone.
To help combat cardiovascular disease by raising money for
the AHA, Sam Houston State University is recruiting teams
and members to participate in the Walker County Heart Walk,
to be held on Sept. 25.
The walk/run, with a 2- and 4-mile route, will begin at 8
a.m. at Bowers Stadium, with registration beginning at 7:30
a.m. This year’s goal for the event is $45,000.
The university collected the most money out of all the participants
for the AHA last year.
Those interested in participating in this year’s heart
walk, or making a donation to the AHA, should contact Maggie
Babcock, special events coordinator in the President’s
Office, at mbabcock@shsu.edu
or 936.294.3415. Donations will also be accepted there.

Education Article Printed
In ‘Bulletin’
An article addressing "Women Leaders Creating Equitable
Schools," written by College of Education dean Genevieve
Brown and Educational Leadership and Counseling department
chair Beverly Irby was published in the summer 2004 issues
of “The Delta Kappa Gamma Bulletin.”
“It talks about trying to create and sustain inclusive
schools and how female principals and leaders can do that,”
Brown said. “It’s more about leadership, what
leaders do to have inclusive schools.”
Brown and Irby, who are both members of the Delta Kappa Gamma
Texas Upsilon Chapter, have published many books and articles
on the topic of gender equity, Brown said.
“We give some examples (in the article) of how we could
sustain an equitable environment in public schools,”
Brown said, “(with things such as) training, weekly
team meetings and assigning mentors.”
“The Bulletin” is a refereed journal reviewed
by an international editorial board and published by the Delta
Kappa Gamma Society International. Selection is based on relevance
of the topics addressed, accuracy and validity, contribution
to the professional literature, originality and quality of
writing.
The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is a professional
honorary society of women educators with over 145,000 members
in approximately 3,100 chapters in 14 countries worldwide.
