Welcome Students With Picnic
The Office of International Programs will welcome approximately
210 students to Sam Houston State and to America with their
third International Student Welcome Picnic on Sept. 11.
The event will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the
Huntsville State Park and is open to all faculty, staff and
international students, as well as anyone interested in the
international students program.
The picnic will be catered by Mckenzie’s Bar-B-Que and
activities planned include volleyball, Frisbee golf, horseshoes,
bicycling, nature walks, canoeing, swimming and horseback
riding.
The deadline to sign up is Sept. 3.
The Huntsville State Park is located six miles southwest of
Huntsville off Interstate 45 on Park Road 40, which can be
reached by taking Exit 109.
The event is co-hosted and the food is provided by the Office
of Multicultural and International Student Services.

Students To Hunt For Treasure
In LSC
The Lowman Student Center will take students on a treasure
hunt for grand prizes that include a DVD player, free books
for a semester and paid tuition for a semester, among others,
at the biannual LSC Scavenger Hunt on Wednesday (Sept. 1).
The hunt will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
With a “Pirates of the Caribbean” theme, students,
faculty and staff can get acquainted with the LSC by following
a map that will take them to the information desk; Java City;
the ballroom; theater; offices for Student Life, the LSC,
the Vice President for Student Services Office, Student Activities,
Student Government Association, Program Council and the Bearkat
OneCard; and finally, the Barnes and Noble University Bookstore.
The offices will have giveaways for all participants, and
those who bring their Bearkat OneCard to that office will
have a chance to receive 1000 reward points by swiping their
OneCard.
The drawing for all grand prizes, which also includes college
survival kits, a 35mm camera, a catered dinner for eight and
free use of the Kat Klub for one hour, will be drawn at 5
p.m.
In addition, grand prizes for faculty and staff will be given
away, which includes a digital camera, a portable DVD player
and coffee for 10.
In order to be eligible for the grand prizes, participants
must complete the hunt, with all stops stamped or checked
on their entry form.

New College Hosts Teaching
Conference
The College of Humanities and Social Sciences recently sponsored
the inaugural Teaching Conference to bring a “spotlight
to the important work of teaching done by faculty in the new
college,” according to interim associate dean A. Jerry
Bruce.
Launched by interim dean Terry M. Thibodeaux, faculty from
all university colleges attended the conference, which was
comprised of nine sessions from which attendees could choose.
Over 25 faculty members presented at the session on topics
ranging widely from an overview of the new teaching evaluation
system and the new American Democracy Project to fostering
academic integrity, helping students succeed, using technology
in the classroom, utilizing alternative learning activities,
and teaching critical thinking across disciplines.
The turnout was tremendous with approximately 100 faculty
members in attendance, with some sessions having to be closed
during the registration process, and the feedback from those
presenting and attending was very positive, Bruce said.
The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is, responsible
for about 60 percent of the core curriculum at Sam Houston
State University.
“It is only fitting that the college begin its existence
on campus with a conference on the importance of teaching,”
Thibodaux said. “Sam Houston State University has a
long history of dedication to the idea of excellence in teaching
among its faculty.”

Travel With SH Offers Visit
With ‘Quilting Queen’
Sam Houston alumni and friends will have the opportunity
to meet the ‘quilt queen’ while participating
in the 30th Anniversary tour of the Houston International
Quilt Festival on Nov. 4.
The one-day tour to the “biggest gathering of women
in the United States” will include VIP seating at a
luncheon where alumna Karey Bresenhan, quilt show founder,
will be a keynote speaker; a private tour of selected exhibits
on the show floor with Bresenhan and her staff; and a behind-the-scenes
chat with Bresenhan, according to Travel with Sam Houston
coordinator Grettle Payne.
“For quilters, she’s (Bresenhan is) the queen,
and for the quilt industry, she is one of the movers-and-shakers
who transformed it from your grandmother quilting in her cottage
to making it a multi-million dollar industry,” Payne
said. “The hotels are already booked, and you can’t
get a room in Houston during this time now because it’s
such a huge event.”
The cost of the trip is $75, is limited to 100 people and
also includes festival admission, an autographed copy of "Celebrate
Great Quilts" by Karey Bresenhan and Nancy O'Bryant Puentes,
and an official 2004 quilt festival anniversary pin. Round-trip
transportation on a charter bus from Huntsville and Conroe
will also be available for $25.
“It should be a very nice one-day tour,” Payne
said.
In addition, participants will have the opportunity to do
“one of the things people like most about the quilt
show:” shop, Payne said.
They can buy quilts or they can buy quilt supplies, a $20,000
long-arm quilting machine or a 50-cent postcard,” she
said. “It’s the whole gamut.”
Bresenhan, a 1998 distinguished alumni honoree, said those
who visit the festival will be amazed at the art on display
at the festival, with its many facets.
“I'm delighted to welcome friends and colleagues from
Sam Houston, where I was so happy years ago, to Quilt Festival,
where we make so many people happy!” she said. “And
Festival in Houston is THE place to see the best of all kinds
of quilts...as Southern Living once said, ‘Festival
is the World's Fair of quilting!’”

Retirement Reception For
McCoy To Be Held Aug. 31
The Sam Houston Press and Copy Center will host a retirement
reception for Westen McCoy on Tuesday (Aug. 31) at 3 p.m.
in Austin Hall.
McCoy, who earned his Bachelor of Science degree in photography
in 1975 from SHSU, began working at the Sam Houston Press
as the staff photographer.
In 1982 he also received his Master of Science degree in agriculture
from SHSU, and in 1994 he moved into his present position
as the process camera/film assembly person.

PC To Sponsor Belly Dancing, Picnic
The Program Council has a wide variety of activities going
on during the first week of September, with activities involving
everything from sandwiches to shaking bellies.
First up is “Belly Rama” on Wednesday (Sept. 1)
at noon in the Lowman Student Center Mall Area.
Demonstrators will be on hand to give attendees the history
of belly dancing and its uses beyond stimulating audiences.
Instructors will also give students a lesson in the art of
belly dancing.
A Pre-Labor Day Picnic will be held on Thursday (Sept.) 2
at 11 a.m. in the LSC Mall Area. Program Council will be providing
refreshments in preparation for the Labor Day holiday.
Following the picnic will be students can answer SHSU trivia
and win prizes with “College Knowledge,” at noon,
also in the LSC Mall Area.

Friends Of Music Seeks
Donors
Last year, funds received by the SHSU School of Music’s
Friends of Music organization were used to help support music
scholarships, provide financial support for the performance
activity and travel expenses by the SHSU ensembles.
This year, Friends of Music support will aide wind ensemble,
chorale, orchestra, jazz ensemble and opera workshop tours
throughout the state, as well as the symphony orchestra European
tour to Hungary, the Czech Republic and Austria in early November.
“The under-girding of Friends of Music makes so much
possible for our talented and deserving students,” said
Rodney Cannon, School of Music director.
The program is comprised of six membership categories. Each
category includes benefits, such as mail-outs detailing upcoming
events, corresponding with the level of giving.
Passholders, who give $25, receive one season pass, good for
free admission to all concerts and recitals sponsored by the
School of Music.
Friends, who give $26 to $49, receive one season pass and
have their names listed in each event program.
Donors, who give $50 to $99, receive two season passes and
have their names listed in each event program.
Sponsors, who give $100 to $249, receive three season passes,
have their names listed in each event program, and receive
certificates for digitally-mastered CD recordings of two concerts.
Benefactors, who give $250 to $499, receive four season passes,
have their names listed in each event program, and receive
certificates for digitally-mastered CD recordings of three
concerts, as well as special invitations to limited-attendance
receptions following selected converts throughout the year.
Patrons, who give $500 or more, receive four season passes,
School of Music mailings, receive certificates for digitally-mastered
CD recordings of four concerts, and special invitations to
limited-attendance receptions following selected converts
throughout the year.
Friends of Music is a non-profit organization, and all contributions
are tax-deductible, less $25 for each pass. For non-requested
passes, an additional tax benefit of $25 will be received.
