Beta Gamma Sigma was founded as a national organization on
February 19, 1913. The first national honor society in business
was a merger of three separate societies established to honor
academic achievement in business at the University of Wisconsin,
University of Illinois and the University of California.
With chapters in the United States, Canada, Hong Kong and
the United Kingdom, Beta Gamma Sigma today is truly an international
society that remains dedicated to recognizing the most outstanding
students of business and management. The Society serves business
schools accredited by AACSB International in the 21st century
knowing that its membership of more than 500,000 comprises
the brightest and best of the world’s business leaders.
Juniors must be in the top 7 percent of their class, seniors
in the top 10 percent and graduating master's students in
the top 20 percent to be eligible for membership. Students
must also meet national and local criteria to be tapped including
a minimum 3.5 GPA. Undergraduates must have completed 30 hours
at Sam Houston State and 12 hours in the College of Business
Administration.
The Sam Houston Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma was named a Premier
Chapter for 2003. This recognition is based on achieving a
100 percent acceptance rate for those tapped. The award also
permits the chapter to award a $1,000 scholarship to a Beta
Gamma Sigma member for the 2004-2005 academic year.
R. Dean Lewis, dean of the College of Business Administration,
serves as president of the chapter and Elsie Ameen is the
secretary-treasurer and faculty adviser. For more information
on the organization, contact Ameen at 936.294.1263 or go to
the COBA home page.
