College of Business Administration Schedules Career Fair
The College of Business Administration at Sam Houston State
University has scheduled its Spring 2004 Business Career Fair
for Tuesday, Feb. 17, in the Lowman Student Center ballroom.
Many registered companies are seeking to hire students majoring
in non-business as well as business programs, and Sam Houston
students from all the colleges are invited to participate.
"The career fair offers opportunities for SHSU students
to prepare for the world of work," said Margaret Quarles,
coordinator of the event.
"Freshmen can build experience and confidence when speaking
with recruiters. Sophomores should inquire about internships
and hone their interviewing skills. Juniors should network
with recruiters, focusing on particular career opportunities.
Seniors should research companies beforehand and come prepared
to discuss their skills and abilities," said Quarles.
"Professional dress is not required to attend the fair,
but a neat appearance, good resume and firm handshake are
highly recommended," she added.
To assist students in making their best first impression,
the university's Career Services office has scheduled two
resume writing and interviewing skills sessions. The workshop
will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 9, in the Smith-Hutson
Business Building auditorium and will be repeated at 2:30
p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 12.
The college has also planned a "Dress for Success"
style show for 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, in the Smith-Hutson
auditorium. Fashion commentary and clothing will be provided
by Casual Corner, Petite Sophisticates and Dillard's Men's
Department, and will be followed by special grooming sessions
for both men and women.
Students who attend the career fair will be provided with
company information, a name badge and a door prize ticket
for chances to win prizes from several local businesses. In
addition, each recruiter will be asked to enter the name of
the student who made the best first impression in terms of
resume, dress and demeanor. Best First Impression winners
will be awarded student subscriptions to the Wall Street Journal.
The Business Career Fair has drawn several new businesses
and organizations to recruit on campus since its inception
in 1999. This year first-time registrants include First State
Bank, Homecomings Financial, Pattillo Brown & Hill, SouthTrust
Bank, and Target Stores. Registrants from the public sector
include the Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration,
the Houston Independent School District, representatives from
the Internal Revenue Service and its Criminal Investigation
division, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the Federal
Reserve and US Navy and Marine Corps officer programs.
"The career fair enables organizations from both the
private and public sectors to meet with outstanding university
students, get a personal look at the business college's programs
and exchange ideas with college faculty," said Quarles.
The college currently offers 10 major fields of study---accounting,
banking, economics, finance, general business, human resource
management, international business, management, management
information systems and marketing.
