Criminal Justice Center To Recognize Outstanding Achievers

The criminal justice program at Sam Houston State University
will host three events on Thursday, April 22, to recognize
individuals who have made significant contributions to the
field, and to honor students who have reached outstanding
achievements in their academic pursuits.
A Leadership Luncheon will kick off activities at 11 a.m.
in the Flag Room of the Criminal Justice Center. Highlighting
the event will be the recognition of student criminal justice
leaders and the presentation of the Defensor Pacem
Medal and the Outstanding Alumnus Award.
The Defensor Pacem Medal is presented each year to
an individual or organization that has provided invaluable
assistance to the criminal justice program. This year's recipient
is Texas state senator Steve Ogden. Ogden was elected to the
Texas senate in 1997, and has been a leader in budget issues,
educational funding, child protection, transportation safety,
and criminal justice. He has been a dedicated supporter of
the criminal justice program at Sam Houston State University,
and he was one of the co-sponsors of the bill to secure funding
for the Criminal Justice Center and the Correctional Management
Institute of Texas.
The recipient of the Outstanding Alumnus Award is Rick Hartley,
executive director of the 100 Club of Houston. Hartley received
the master of science degree in criminal justice in December
1992. He has distinguished himself in the law enforcement
community, both as an instructor and as an advocate for continued
education. Hartley will also address criminal justice faculty,
students and their families at the evening's Honors Convocation.
At 1:30 p.m., all students, faculty, staff, and friends of
the Criminal Justice Center are invited to gather in front
of the Center's main entrance to attend the annual Sundial
Ceremony. The ceremony has been held each year since 1990
to honor the alumni of the Criminal Justice Center who serve
the cause of justice throughout the world and to remember
those who have perished in the line of duty.
The day's events will conclude at 7:30 p.m. with the College
of Criminal Justice's Honors Convocation, when the college's
most academically gifted students will be publicly recognized.
The program is open to the public.
