Update For Week Of Dec. 19
Channel 8 To Run SHSU Documentary Jan. 9, 13
The Sam Houston State University 125th Anniversary documentary
has been completed and is scheduled for showing on Jan. 9
and Jan. 13 on Houston's KUHT-TV Channel 8.
Show times will be on Jan. 9 at 6:30 p.m. and Jan. 13 at
1:30 p.m..
The 30-minute documentary-style and informational video tells
the story of the founding of Sam Houston State University
and the role it has played in higher education in Texas over
the
past 125 years.
The film takes an in-depth look at the school that was
the first teacher-training institution in the Southwest and
the
third oldest public higher education institution in Texas.
It will feature a combination of on-camera interviews, historical
footage, archive photos, new video footage of campus scenes,
and visuals of students in the SHSU learning environment.
After its showing on Channel 8, the program will be offered
to other PBS stations throughout Texas and the nation, as
well as a number of other appropriate national broadcast
outlets.

To Break For Holidays, Reopen Jan. 3
With finals now over
and classes dismissing this past week for a break between
semesters for Sam Houston State University
students’ and faculty, staff members will also receive
a week-long break as the university will close for the holidays.
SHSU will be closed from Dec. 24 until Jan. 3 in observance
of Christmas and New Years Day.
Students will begin returning to campus on Jan. 9, with the
opening of the residence halls beginning at 11 a.m., and
classes will resume on Jan. 12.

Harlem Globetrotters
To Play At Johnson
Coliseum
Tickets are now on sale for the Harlem Globetrotters, who
will return to the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum on Feb. 9
at 7 p.m.
Their last appearance on the SHSU campus was Jan. 15, 2000.

Veterans Memorial
To Be ‘Forgotten No More’
The Sam Houston State
University department of theatre and dance will pay tribute
to the Korean War Veterans Memorial
in Washington, D.C., through a dance project on Jan. 21-22.
“
Forgotten No More,” choreographed by assistant professor
of dance Kista Tucker, will consist of sections such as “walking;” “battle;” “dead
and wounded;” “a letter from home,” which
is about the ‘dear john’ letter; “waiting;” “POW
(prisoner of war);” a battle scene; and “stateside,” represents
what’s going on in the United States at that time,
according to Tucker.
The show will be held at 8 p.m. both days on the Mainstage
at the University Theatre Center.
In addition, the military science department and local Korean
War veterans will be on hand to perform color and honor guards,
as well as a dual “Taps.”
The 35 minute-long program, performed by graduate and undergraduate
students, was sponsored by a $26,500 grant given to Tucker
by the university’s Research and Sponsored Programs
office.
“
We took it to Long Beach, Calif., last summer and preformed
it for a really nice audience out there,” Tucker said,
adding that a smaller version of the project was performed
at SHSU last summer to gauge reactions before going to California.

CJ To Honor Niederhofer With
Retirement Party
After working in various departments at Sam
Houston State University for 26 years, Beverly Niederhofer,
currently a
staff assistant
in the College of Criminal Justice, will retire on Jan. 15.
A come-and-go retirement party in her honor is scheduled
for Jan. 13, from 3-5 p.m., in the Bluebonnet Room of the
University
Hotel.
Niederhofer began her career with SHSU in 1967 in the comptroller’s
office. She left briefly and came back to work in such offices
as foreign languages, the Business Office,
financial aid and accounts payable before taking a position
in the College of Criminal Justice in 1998.
In her retirement, Niederhofer plans to travel with friends
and help take care of her 10-month-old grandchild, according
to her daughter Sharese Hurst, who is also the coordinator
for the Correctional Management Institute of Texas.

Book Published By Texas Review Gets Good Press
Ron Stone, host of the Eyes of Texas and now a professor
of Texas history at Houston Baptist University, is just
one of several folks who think highly of one of the Texas
Review Press's latest publications.
“
Roads to Forgotten Texas" combines the poetry of Joyce
Pounds Hardy and the photos of Tommy LaVergne. Both are native
Texans, and LaVergne attended Sam Houston State University.
"
This is a beautiful book, filled with artistic photographs
and lovely poems evocative of a land that should not be forgotten," Stone
wrote.
John B. Boles, professor of history at Rice University, was
also impressed.
"
LaVergne's photographs and Hardy's word pictures brilliantly
and capture and reveal the artifacts of lived experience
with stunning vividness," Boles wrote.

College Of Education
Plans For Ethics Institute
The College of Education is in
the process of organizing an ethics institute to address
the concerns of administrators,
educators and students in the field
of education.
This planning process is under the direction of the College of Education dean
Genevieve Brown, with Judy DeTrude chairing the committee.
DeTrude, director of the Center for Research and Counselor Education, has presented
nationally on the topic of ethics and has conducted research on current ethical
issues in counseling.
She worked with the students from the counselor education doctoral program’s
second cohort in October to offer an ethics institute, which was sponsored
by Chi Sigma Iota, the international counseling honorary.
Attendees were offered
continuing education hours for both the LPC and LMFT licenses.
The committee for the ethics institute met and constructed a survey, to be
distributed to all education students during the first part of the Spring semester,
which
will examine the ethical concerns for educators and ask the respondents how
the institute can help address these concerns.
Members of this committee are Mary Ann Bell, from the library science department;
Cindy Simpson, from the language, literacy and special populations department;
Felicia Taylor, from the curriculum and instruction department; Mark Gaus,
from the health and kinesiology department; Stacey Edmonson, from the educational
leadership and counseling department; and Brian Miller, from the field experiences
office.

Accounting Student Wins Society Scholarship
Lesley Jennice
Vasquez, a senior accounting major at Sam Houston State
University, has been awarded a Beta Gamma
Sigma scholarship for her superior performance
in the study of business.
A resident of Waco, Vasquez has received a $1,000 scholarship for her educational
needs for the 2004-2005 academic year.
Scholarship recipients are student members of Beta Gamma Sigma and represent
the top percentage of students within business programs accredited by AACSB
International (the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business).
Recipients are chosen from colleges and universities around the world,
and embody the ideals set forth by Beta Gamma Sigma: honor, wisdom and
earnestness.
Membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is based on academic achievement and is
extended to the best students in programs accredited by AACSB International.
It is
considered the highest recognition available to business students worldwide.
