Harris County Commissioner/Distinguished Alum to Speak
Harris
County Commissioner Jerry Eversole will speak at Sam Houston
State University Wednesday (Nov. 17) about politics, government
and the role of public relations
and communications in his field.
Janaeya Carmouche, president of the SHSU chapter of the Public
Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), which is sponsoring
the presentation, said that Eversole will also provide students
advice on how they should prepare for
a career in the government sector.
The presentation is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
in the Lee Drain Building, room 214.
Eversole graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1966 in political science and
played on the SHSU baseball team. After graduation he worked first in the Liberty
school district as a head baseball coach and assistant football coach.
Prior to being elected to his present position as commissioner of Harris County
Precinct 4, he was president of the Humble Area Chamber of Commerce for more
than 18 years, during which he focused on the economic development of northeast
Harris County.
In 1991 he began his tenure as commissioner and is now in his fourth four-year
term. He administers the largest precinct in Harris County, which is the largest
county in Texas with a larger population than that of 24 states.
Throughout his career, Eversole has been awarded numerous honors - from organizations
such as the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the Texas Chamber of Commerce Executive
Association, the North Houston Association, the Park People, the Humble Area
Chamber of Commerce, the Texas Chamber of Commerce Executive Association, Future
Farmers of America, the Texas Governor's office, and Rotary International.
In 2001 he was named presented the SHSU Distinguished Alumni Award.
In addition to his honors Eversole has raised $1 million in funding for the
Texas Gulf Coast Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through his
Jerry Eversole Invitational Golf Tournament.
Eversole will be speaking as part of the SHSU PRSSA's Speaker Series, which is
entering its third year. The chapter is closely associated with the Houston Chapter
of the Public Relations Society of America.
