Excellence Awards Nominations Sought
Sam Houston State University faculty will have the opportunity
to receive a $5,000 stipend through this year’s Excellence
in teaching, research and service awards.
The one-time awards were raised this year from $1,400 for
Excellence in Teaching, $1,200 for Excellence in Research
and $1,000 for Excellence in Service. The Dean’s Council
made the decision to raise the stipend to show their significance
in a time when everyday costs have risen but the stipends
had not changed, according to Richard Eglsaer, associate vice
president for Academic Affairs.
“The deans consider these to be three of the most prestigious
awards we give to our faculty, and they felt that the stipend
had long outgrown its relative value, so we needed to make
the monetary awards measurable to the honor we were bestowing
on it,” Eglsaer said. “We raised it to the $5,000
for each of those as a way of letting the faculty know that
we consider this significant.”
Nominations for all three awards will be accepted through
Feb. 20 at 4 p.m.
Voting for the Excellence in Teaching Award, which can be
done online,
is open to all students, alumni, faculty, and staff via the
SHSU web page or by a personal nomination letter that may
be submitted to the committee. Previous award winners are
not eligible for nomination.
“This is a very prestigious award, recognizing outstanding
teaching service and will be awarded at May’s commencement
ceremonies,” said Stanley F. Kelley, excellence in teaching
committee chair.
Those who wish to submit letters may send them to Kelley’s
office in the agricultural sciences department, at campus
mail Box 2088.
The recipients of the research and service awards must be
full-time faculty members, who have been employed by SHSU
for at least 5 years, to be eligible, and previous recipients
are not eligible for the same award.
Faculty and staff may nominate one faculty member for the
research award and one for the service award can do so by
sending a brief letter of the nominee’s contributions
to David Burris, chair of the Faculty Achievement Awards Committee,
at campus mail Box 2090.
