Political science chair
Robert Biles, far left, and College of Education dean
Genevieve Brown, far right, were selected by the Faculty
Senate as the first recipients of their Academic Leadership
Awards Thursday afternoon. With Biles and Brown are
Kandi Tayebi, outgoing Faculty Senate chair and associate
professor of English, and university president James
F. Gaertner.
Tayebi said of Biles, "He has created a cohesive
department that is steeped in tradition and yet open
to new ideas...His academic leadership has led to a
new master's program in public administration. Of Brown,
Tayebi said, "(She) was able to turn around the
college that was demoralized and recreate a burgeoning
gifted faculty who strive to produce the most qualified
public school educators...By recognizing the achievements
of her faculty and students, actively pursuing input
from her faculty on important decisions, and finding
ways to build on each member's strengths, she has developed
a dynamic college..." Among other business, the
Faculty Senate retired outgoing senators and accepted
new ones.
