FitBucks Program Kicks
Off
As an incentive for faculty, staff and students to stay
active, the Recreational Sports department kicked off its
annual FitBucks program on Friday (Feb. 6).
The program, which was initiated about two and a half years
ago, rewards participants with prizes based on the number
of points he/she earns.
“Faculty, staff and students send me a weekly log filled
in with the time spent exercising,” said Tina DeAses,
assistant director of Wellness Programs. “I send out
a weekly e-mail showing how many "FitBucks" everyone
has received.
“At the end of the semester, depending on how many "FitBucks"
one accumulates, prizes are awarded,” she said.
Participants can earn points by doing several different forms
of physical activity, including fitness and sports activities,
as well as household activities, such as cleaning, or outdoor
activities, such as gardening or raking leaves. Other activities
may also be included, pending approval by DeAses.
Those who want to participate can begin at any time during
the semester; however, before participation begins, he/she
should e-mail DeAses, at rca_cnh@shsu.edu,
to receive a FitBucks ID number.
To download a workout log, to view approved activities, or
for more information, visit the FitBucks
page from the Recreations Sports Web site.

MISS To Celebrate Diversity
With Two Events
The Office of Multicultural and International Student Services
will set up a “Hearts for Diversity” display in
the LSC gallery from Monday through Friday (Feb. 9-13).
The display will consist of written pledges in the shape of
a heart of steps participants will take to increase awareness
in diversity, according to MISS program coordinator Jennifer
Roberts.
The pledges were collected last week by members of the Students
on a Quest for Unity and Diversity committee.
“They each have a packet of hearts that they are going
to pass out to the general student, faculty and staff population,
and all the people involved will write what they plan to do
for diversity, whether it is to attend a NAACP meeting, attend
an IHA meeting, if they plan to work with someone of another
race,” Roberts said.
It’s a project for the general population, every race,
every color, everything.”
On Monday, the Office of MISS and SQUAD will also celebrate
Alice Walker day with a raffle of four of her books in the
LSC Mall Area at 12 p.m. The raffle, in honor of Walker’s
birthday on that day, will be free.
The group will also give out candy and tell the history of
Walker, who is still living and is known for her book “The
Color Purple.”
“It’s one of many programs that celebrates the
accomplishments of people from different backgrounds,”
said Brandon Cooper, student coordinator for Student Activities.
SQUAD is one of many organizations affiliated with the Office
of MISS and is designed to help the office develop programs
and services that will foster a multicultural perspective
for all students. Currently, SQUAD consists of 16 members,
chosen by the office, who represent every race, ethnicity
and ethnic background of the SHSU student body.

'Frontier Days' To
Be Held This Weekend
The Sam Houston Memorial Museum will host “Frontier
Days at Old Town Spring” on Saturday and Sunday (Feb.
14-15).
The event will have several entertainment venues and something
for everyone to enjoy, according to Patrick Nolan, Sam Houston
Memorial Museum director.
“The Sam Houston Raven Rangers will help reenact the
Civil War,” Nolan said. “There will also be a
chili cook-off, cowboy camp, live music and crafts.”
The event, held in Old Town Spring, is a smaller version of
the larger folk festival the museum hosts yearly, according
to Nolan.
Old Town Spring is located 20 miles south of Conroe.
Admission to frontier days is free, and is open to the public.
For more information, call the Sam
Houston Memorial Museum at 936.294.1832.

Hanagriff Receives
Department Of Agriculture Grants
For the third year in a row, Roger Hanagriff, assistant
professor of agricultural economics, has received funding
from the Texas Department of Agriculture to analyze the effectiveness
of their various marketing programs.
The grants allow Hanagriff to develop and analyze responses
from questionnaires regarding various aspects of the highly
popular “Go TEPP” and “Go Texan” campaigns,
as well as a new rural development project called “Texas
Yes.”
Working with Hanagriff on TDA projects are SHSU faculty members
Dwayne Pavelock, Carolyn Robinson, Doug Ullrich, and Kevin
Smith; Tim Murphy, assistant professor of agricultural education
at Texas A&M University; and Charlie Hall, professor and
extension economist at the University of Tennessee.
The reports provided by Hanagriff and associates are shared
with members of the State Legislature in seeking additional
support to expand existing markets and create new ones for
Texas agricultural products.
“These projects are very beneficial to the agricultural
producers of our state and I’m pleased that TDA has
expressed continued confidence in me and my colleagues to
compile and provide such essential information,” Hanagriff
said.
“The projects continue to provide additional opportunities
for us to meet some of the needs of Texas agriculture and
gives our students a unique opportunity to gain first-hand
knowledge on the effectiveness of a wide range of agricultural
marketing strategies."
