Science Building To Take
Parking Spaces
While parking is still available on the Sam Houston State
University campus, it is not as convenient as it once was,
and it is getting scarcer with each new construction project.
This is the word from Dennis Culak, assistant director for
the university's public safety services division. Culak said
that some students returning from spring break March 22 might
find their favorite parking spaces have become part of a new
science building.
A portion of the parking lot southwest of Ave. J. and Bowers
Blvd., near the new SouthPaw campus dining facility, will
be used for the new $18 million, 60,000-square-feet facility.
The new facility will house the chemistry and forensic science
programs, while physics will remain in the Farrington Building.
Completion is expected by late spring of 2005.
Culak said that the Bowers Stadium parking lot has the capacity
to provide the needed spaces, and that some students may opt
for the new parking garage if they are on campus for a short
time.
Rates in the parking garage, located just north of the Lowman
Student Center, are $2 for the first hour and $1 per hour
for each hour after that to a maximum of $8 per 24 hours.
Contract spaces are available for $200 per semester.
Culak also suggested that visitors attending fine arts and
other events in that area should consider the garage.
Additional faculty and staff parking is almost always available
in the lot east of the library, he said.

Staff Excellence Nominations
Sought
The Office of the President is now seeking nominations for
those who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence for
the Staff Excellence Award.
The nominee must be a full-time non-temporary staff member
with a minimum of two years service at the time of nomination
who has not been a previous recipient.
Nominees should also show meritorious performance; display
proven commitment to excellence in service; excel in his/her
job; demonstrate outstanding abilities; innovative ideas,
efficient operations and a high level of motivation; and be
respected by the university community.
In addition to the recognition, one exempt and two non-exempt
staff employees will be awarded with a $2000 stipend.
Any full-time member of the SHSU faculty or staff may nominate
one or more employees. Forms are available through the Human
Resources Department, on the third floor of the Estill Building.
Forms should be returned in a sealed envelope to: Human Resources
Department, Box 2356, SHSU. All nominations must be submitted
by March 24.

SHSU Offers Opportunity
To Study Abroad In France
Sam Houston State University students have the opportunity
to study in France for six weeks this summer, thanks to an
agreement between SHSU and the University of Auvergne.
Students will attend classes in Auvergne from the end of May
until the first week in July.
Participating students will pay tuition and fees to SHSU and
study at the University of Auvergne without further charges
for tuition. The University of Auvergne has arranged for the
students to stay in campus housing while they are attending
classes.
Although a knowledge of French would be helpful, it is not
required.
Studies will include French language training and introductory
lectures on a variety of business topics.
More information and applications are available in SHSU's
Office of International Programs. The application deadline
is March 25 at 12 p.m.
A $650 scholarship is available through the Office of International
Programs, located in Frels Building Room 207. The deadline
for submitting an application for the scholarship is March
8 at 5 p.m.

Biology Establishes Award
In Honor Of Former Student
The SHSU biological sciences department is establishing
the Daniel Joseph “Joey” Harrison Student Research
Award to honor the memory of the late alumnus, who received
his Bachelor of Science degree in biology in 2000.
The award, due to the generosity of the Harrison family and
friends, honors the memory of Joey Harrison for his love of
and dedication to the biological sciences, according to Andy
Dewees, biology professor.
“Joey exhibited a curiosity for the workings of science
that was contagious to all those around him,” he said.
“Prior to his untimely death, Joey had completed requirements
for the Master of Science degree in biology, and the university
conferred this degree to Joey posthumously in August 2003.”
In memory of Joey’s pursuit of knowledge in biology,
the award will be given yearly to an undergraduate or graduate
student majoring in biology or environmental science.
The monetary award, administered by the department’s
faculty research committee, will be used to support the student’s
research project.

Clay Club To Sell Hand-Made
Mugs
For the second year, the SHSU Clay Club will sell ceramic
mugs filled with hot cocoa on Monday and Tuesday (March 1-2)
from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days.
The hand-crafted cups were made by the students and alumni
of the SHSU ceramic arts department and will be available
for $10 to $15.
Proceeds from the fund-raising event will benefit a student
art trip to the National Council on the Education of Ceramic
Arts conference in Indianapolis. The meeting is the largest
clay conference in the nation.

Golf Tournament Swings Into
Raven Nest Saturday
Students, faculty and staff are being sought to participate
in the Golf Tournament or fast run/walk on Saturday (March
6) at Raven Nest Golf Course.
The fast walk/run will be held from 8-9 a.m. Participants
can choose between a 9-hole, approximately 2.69 miles, run/walk
or and 18-hole, approximately 5.36 miles, run.
The cost to participate is $10, which includes a T-shirt,
and pre-registration is not necessary. Lunch will also be
available for $10.
The golf tournament will begin at 9 a.m. and will cost $75
per person, which includes green fees and golf cart rental,
range balls, lunch and a T-shirt.
All proceeds benefit the Huntsville Beautification Committee
and are tax deductible. In the event of rain, lunch will be
served and rain checks will be given out, but the tournament
will not be rescheduled.

Outdoor Recreation Reschedules
Two Events
The Outdoor Recreation division of Recreations Sports will
give participants another opportunity to ‘howl at the
moon’ with a nighttime canoe and kayak trip on Friday
(March 5).
The trip is being repeated not only for its popularity over
the past two semesters but because the first outing, which
had been scheduled for Feb. 4, was cancelled due to rain,
according to Marvin Seale, associate director of outdoor recreation.
The event will be held at the Huntsville State Park, and participants
should meet at the Health and Kinesiology Center, where transportation
will be provided, at 6 p.m. The return to campus is scheduled
for no later than 9:30 p.m.
Those interested must sign up by 10 p.m. on March 4 in HKC
Room 104. Participants also must complete a waiver and brief
health questionnaire, and an information sheet will be available
that includes tips on what to wear and bring.
Participation is limited to 12, and the minimum number of
sign-ups required to hold the event is four. The cost is $5
for students, $7 for faculty and staff, and $10 for guests.
In addition, the “Pedal Power” mountain biking
trip at the Huntsville State Park has been rescheduled for
March 8. Departure time for the trip will be at 3 p.m. on
Feb. 23, and participants are expected to return by 6 p.m.
The cost is $15 for students, $17 for faculty and staff and
$20 for guests, which covers bike rentals, and if a participant
brings his/her own bike, there is a $10 discount. The sign-up
deadline is Friday (March 5) at 5 p.m.

ASU Trio To Perform
Ocotillo Winds Concert
Three faculty musicians from Arizona State University will
perform an Ocotillo Winds State Trio Concert on the SHSU campus
on Thursday (March 4). The event will be held at 7:30 p.m.
in the Recital Hall.
The Ocotillo Winds, which are comprised of Robert Schuring
playing oboe, Robert Spring playing clarinet and Jeffrey Lyman
playing bassoon, will play a variety of classical music for
the reed trio, a combination of the three instruments, according
to Patricia Card, assistant professor of music and woodwinds
area coordinator.
“They are touring in Texas and have been invited to
perform at SHSU,” she said.
Also that day, Spring will present a clarinet master class
at 3 p.m. in Fine Arts Building Room 219, and Lyman will host
a bassoon master class at 3:30 p.m., also in the Fine Arts
Building.

Workshops To Explore
Test Anxiety, Career Options
The Counseling Center will repeat its Decreasing Test Anxiety
workshop on Tuesday (March 2), from 2-3:30 p.m.
It will also host a Career Exploration workshop on March 8,
from 9-11 a.m.
The free workshops will be held at the Counseling Center,
across from the Lee Drain Building and next to the Farrington
Building.

Alumnus To Speak
At Physics Colloquium
Jaakko Halmari, graduate student in the department of mechanical
engineering at Texas Tech University, will be the featured
speaker at the Physics Colloquium on Thursday (March 4)
.
Halmari, who received his Bachelor of Science degree in physics
from SHSU in 2001, will discuss the "Development of a
Hydrogen Powered Hybrid Electric Vehicle" from 3-4 p.m.
in Farrington Building Room 207.
The colloquium is hosted by physics professor Charlie Meitzler.

Alumni Receptions To Be
Held In Dallas, Ft. Worth
The Sam Houston State University Alumni Association will
host two Bearkat alumni receptions for graduates in the Fort
Worth and Dallas areas on March 25.
The Fort Worth luncheon will be held at Joe T. Garcia’s,
at 2201 Commerce, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets for the
event are $15 per person or $25 per couple, and business attire
is requested.
The Fort Worth event is also sponsored by the Law Offices
of J. Warren St. John, class of ’79.
The Dallas reception will be held at Del Frisco's of Dallas,
at 5251 Spring Valley Road, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets
for the event are $20 per person or $35 per couple, and business
attire is requested.
The Dallas event is also sponsored by Lee Drain, class of
’50.
University president James F. Gaertner will be the featured
speaker for both events.
