SHSU Gearing Up For Big Time 'Birthday Bash'
Although college homecomings are supposed to have a celebratory
air about them, this year's event at Sam Houston State University
will have an unusually festive feel, as the university commemorates
its 125th anniversary Oct. 11-16.
Planners have designated homecoming week as a "Birthday
Bash," and activities will kick off on Monday, Oct. 11,
with a rally at noon in the Lowman Student Center mall area.
A hypnotist will entertain viewers that evening at 6 o'clock
in the LSC Ballroom.
On Tuesday, the President's Office will host a 125th anniversary
ceremony, beginning at 11 a.m. at historic Austin Hall. Faculty,
staff and students will march through campus with the Bearkat
Band at 11:30 a.m., and a panoramic photo of the university
community will be taken at noon on Intramural Field No. 2.
Since no birthday party would be complete without a cake,
an eight foot wide creation, decorated appropirately, will
be served to those participating in the photo.
Students will have the opportunity to design and paint their
own 2004 homecoming memento in the form of a ceramic mug when
the Office of Student Activities hosts "Glazin' Over
Sam" in the LSC mall area at 12:30 p.m. Later that evening,
students can bowl at Huntsville Lanes at 9 p.m. in the "Get
Your Bowl On" event.
Wednesday night will be a busy one on campus, with the traditional
Homecoming Parade and Sam Jam carnival. The parade will begin
at 7 p.m. at Sam Houston Avenue and 20th Street and will follow
a route north to 13th Street, turning and proceeding back
to campus.
Sam Jam will feature rides and midway-type activities for
students and will begin at 8 p.m. in the north parking area
of Bowers Stadium.
On Friday, the class of 1954 will be honored at 11 a.m. at
the Golden Circle Reunion, and the Distinguished Alumni Gala
will take place at 6 p.m. in the LSC Ballroom.
The Bearkats will host Nicholls State in a soccer match at
Pritchett Field at 7 p.m.
The highlight of the week will be on Saturday with a number
of open houses and receptions taking place in the morning.
All five colleges will host events in their respective administrative
buildings at 10 a.m. In addition, the Department of Agricultural
Sciences, the Department of Radio and Television, and the
Honors Program will host receptions, also at 10 a.m.
SHSU President James Gaertner will greet campus visitors at
11 a.m. in Austin Hall during a "Pre-Game With the President"
activity.
The Lettermen Association will host its annual Hall of Honor
Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. in the LSC Ballroom.
The university-wide party continues at noon in the Bowers
Stadium parking lot, as supporters will be "tailgating"
in Bearkat Alley. There will be food, music and activities
for individuals of all ages prior to the big homecoming football
game at 2 p.m. between SHSU and Nicholls State.
Volleyball enthusiasts can take in the match between SHSU
and Texas State San Marcos at 7 p.m. in Johnson Coliseum.
