Physics Society Wins
Outstanding Chapter Award
The SHSU chapter of the Society of Physics Students has been
selected as an outstanding SPS chapter for the 2002-2003 school
year by the national organization.
Less than 10 percent of the SPS chapters nationwide, or about
one per state, are honored with the award, according to SPS
director Gary White.
Selection for the award is based on the depth and breadth
of chapter activities in such areas as physics research, public
science outreach, physics tutoring programs, hosting and representation
at meetings, and providing social interaction for chapter
members.
“Thank you for the time and energy you devote to the
students and to their betterment,” White said in a letter
informing the chapter of its receiving the award. “This
award is a testament to your personal leadership skills as
much as it is an acknowledgement of your chapter’s superior
performance.”

Museum Raises Texas’
10 Flags For Exhibit
The Sam Houston Memorial Museum will be showcasing reproductions
of the flags used to promote Texas during the Texas Revolution.
The exhibit entitled, “The Flags of the Texas Revolution,”
began Jan. 6 and will be on display through Feb. 29.
Dave Wight, the exhibit curator, said the flags will help
visitors obtain knowledge of the Texas Revolution.
“This exhibit will present more interesting facts to
individuals wanting knowledge of the Texas Revolution,”
said Wight, “The exhibit will cover the period between
the years of 1835 to 1837 and will showcase flags that strictly
came from Texas and the Texas Navy.”
There are 10 flags in the exhibit, some of which will include
reproductions of the flag used in the Battle of San Jacinto
and the flag flown at the Alamo.
The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to
4:30 p.m. and 12-4:30 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free.

RTV Engineer Receives Re-certification
Radio/Television chief engineer Steve Sandlin was recently
re-certified as a personal broadcast engineer by the Society
of Broadcast Engineers.
This is the highest level of professional certification available
to a broadcast engineer, as there are fewer than 750 engineers
so certified worldwide, he said.
Sandlin has held several levels of certification issued by
the society and has held professional broadcast engineer certification
for the last five years.
Sandlin has been employed as chief engineer of the RTV department
for eight years and is responsible for all technical matters
involving the department, including implementation of new
technology for both radio and television.
A 29-year veteran of the broadcast industry, he has previously
served as chief engineer at KBTX-TV in Bryan, KSAM radio in
Huntsville and KLVI/KYKR in Beaumont.
In addition, he is frequently consulted on technical matters
by broadcast interests and insurance companies.

Theatre Prof Lauded For
Play Costume Design
Kristina Hanssen, SHSU associate professor of theatre, was
recently praised for her costume design work for Stages Repertory
Theatre’s production of “Bat Boy.”
The play, which ran from Dec. 5 to Jan. 11 in Houston, was
said to soar “with quirky humor” by Everett Evans
in the Dec. 9 issue of the Houston Chronicle.
“I suspect Houston may have found its surprise hit of
the holiday season with Stages’ ‘Bat Boy,’”
he said.
In addition, he added that the design work, including Hanssen’s
costumes, was “clever.”
