Ag Department To Hold Catfish Dinner
Fundraiser
The SHSU department of agricultural sciences will host the
annual Agriculture Alumni Dinner and Gathering on Aug. 3.
The event will be held at 6 p.m. in the Lytle Bend Ranch Pavilion,
located on Potosi Road, in Abilene.
The dinner is being held in conjunction with the high school
agriculture teachers’ conference being held there and
is open to everyone.
The catfish dinner, with “all the fixings” and
an adult beverage, will cost $20 per adult, $10 per child
between 6 and 13, and children under 6 are free.
In addition, there will be silent and live auctions, with
all proceeds benefiting the agricultural sciences department
for things such as scholarships.
Tickets can be purchased through the agricultural sciences
department at 936.294.1215 or at the door. However, an approximate
headcount is needed prior to the event, so advance purchase

Sororities Start Recruiting
For Fall
SHSU’s four national and social sorority chapters,
Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Chi Omega, Zeta Tau Alpha and Sigma
Sigma Sigma, will be searching for new members during Panhellenic
Sorority Recruitment, from Aug. 17-20.
“Women should get involved in Panhellenic Recruitment
because it is a great way to meet new people, get involved
on campus, sharpen leadership skills, have a home away from
home, and have life long friendships across the nation,”
said Kimberly Duncan, vice president of recruitment for the
SHSU Panhellenic Association.
“Sororities stand out from other organizations because
of the life long commitment that continues after graduation,”
she said. “I also know that my sorority has provided
me with a large amount of support, and, at times, I don't
know how I would have survived a crisis without my chapter
behind me.”
The cost of the recruitment process is $70, which pays for
three nights hotel stay at the University Hotel. Each night
of recruitment involves different themed parties at each of
the four SHSU chapters to acquaint attendees with each sorority.
Information and applications will be available in the Office
of Student Activities, in Lowman Student Center Suite 328;
by calling 936.294.3861; e-mailing the Panhellenic Council
at pha@shsu.edu; or visiting the Panhellenic Web site www.shsu.edu/~org_pha.
The sign-up deadline to sign up is 5 p.m. on Aug. 16.

Penelope Hasekoester, Sam Houston Sate University associate
professor of theatre, has been elected as the Kennedy Center
American College Theatre Festival Region VI vice-chair for
the state of Texas.
Hasekoester will serve as vice-chair until 2006 and then will

nomination goes to a “teacher of acting who best exemplified
the educational mission of KCACTF.”
KCACTF is a national theatre program whose goal is to encourage,
develop and improve college and university theatre programs
across the country. Each year over 18,000 students from colleges

Staff Member Receives Regional
Award
SHSU Small Business Development Center administrative assistant
Amy Viator was awarded the Network Administrative Excellence
Award for the second year from the University of Houston’s
SBDC in April. The UH SBDC is the central office for all of
the development centers in the region, which includes 32 counties
and 14-subcenters, according to Viator.
“I felt very honored and humbled,” she said. “The
best in the business work in our region, and to be compared
to all of them and still get it, it’s a great honor.
“I have a wonderful boss, and it’s the best group
of people in the world (to work with),” she said. “For
me to get that kind of award, it’s because they help
me and make my job easy.”
Viator received the award at a regional staff meeting, which
is held quarterly and coincides with some of the required
professional development training all SBDC office personnel
must complete annually.
The UH regional office selected Viator this year from approximately
30 candidates nominated by members from each center.
“I was very surprised,” she said. “I didn’t
even know that my name had been submitted.”
Viator has worked for the SHSU SBDC for seven years and has
worked for the university since 1991, she said.
Along with a crystal trophy, Viator received a cash award.
