SHSU
Update For Week Of June 6
Associate Dean Says ‘Good
Bye’ To SHSU
|
Hollis Lowery-Moore |
After 21 years at Sam Houston State, associate dean of the
College of Education Hollis Lowery-Moore will leave the university
to become dean of the College of Education and Human Development
at Lamar University on Aug. 13. Her duties at Lamar will begin
on Aug. 16.
A “good-bye” reception for Lowery-Moore will
be held on June 30, from 2-4 p.m. in Austin Hall.
With both of her children in college, Lowry-Moore said it
was a good time to make the change.
“I am excited,” she said. “It’s going
to be a new opportunity, and we were ready for this.”
During her time at SHSU, Lowery-Moore has taught in the library
science, secondary education and language, literacy and special
populations departments; served as coordinator of the reading
and special education program; and was chair of the language,
literacy and special populations department before moving
to associate dean for the second time in 2002. She was also
associate dean from 1993-1997.
Lowery-Moore has guided the College of Education through
two successful National Council for Accreditation of Teacher
Education visits and has initiated a systematic assessment
system for educator preparation.
In addition, she has led the development of a reading masters
on-line program, participated in the development of a doctoral
program in counseling education and coordinated the development
and approval of SHSU’s post baccalaureate route to the
teacher certification program implemented this year.
While she “will miss everything about Sam Houston,”
Lowery-Moore is also looking forward to the challenge of a
new position at a new university, she said.
“It’s (Sam Houston has) been an absolutely wonderful
place to be,” she said. “The people, the administration,
at Sam Houston have been just terrific to work with.
“What I hope is that it will give me a great model to
carry with me and use in helping another place move forward,”
she said.
Gifts or a letter/note for a memory book can be sent to Pat
Sprott, College of Education and Applied Sciences, Box
2119, Huntsville, Texas, 77341-2119.

Professors Exhibit Works In Conjunction
With Class
SHSU professors James E. Paster and Tony Shipp will display
some of their artwork in the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery through
July 1.
The exhibit, "The Same...only Different," incorporates
sculptures into images to make photography in 3-D form, Shipp
said.
“It’s constructed art,” said Debbie Davenport,
slide librarian. “It’s like nothing you’ve
ever seen before.”
The exhibit is being displayed in conjunction with a team-taught
class, “photography in 3-D,” by the two, with
Shipp teaching the sculpture part and Paster teaching the
photography part.
Both used the same techniques they are teaching in their own
artworks, Shipp said.
There will be a closing reception for the exhibit on July
1, at 5 p.m. at the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery, located in Art
Building F.
For more information, contact Shipp at 936.294.1324 or Davenport
