Workshop
To Explore Healthy Relationships
Miscommunication is one of the biggest problems people face
in a relationship, according to Pamela McManus, interim director
of the Counseling Center.
To help students gain a better understanding of these and
other issues, the Counseling Center will host an “Exploring
Healthy Relationships” workshop on Wednesday (March
10). The workshop will be held from 2:30-4:30 p.m. in the
center, located across from the Lee Drain Building and next
to the Farrington Building.
The workshop focuses on what a healthy relationship is comprised
of, McManus said.
“There’s a lot of miscommunication that goes on,
mind reading, about what the other’s expectations are,
so I like to make that open so people will understand,”
she said. “A lot of assumptions are made by one party
or the other, or both, and they don’t check things out
and things just escalate because of that.”
The workshop has been so popular in the past that McManus
has gone around campus to present it, she said.
“It’s an issue, developmentally, that students
are struggling with at this stage in their lives,” McManus
said. “This is the time that they’re meeting their
life partners and looking forward to establishing some kind
of ongoing relationship, and that’s just a natural part
of what goes on in that stage in life.”
Space is limited, and those who are interested should sign-up
at the center or by phone at 936.294.1720. For more information,
visit the Counseling
Center Web site.

Teske Named To ‘Criminology’
Editorial Board
The American Society of Criminology board of directors recently
appointed Raymond Teske, Jr., to the editorial advisory board
of “Criminology: An Interdisciplinary Journal.”
Teske, a criminal justice professor who has been a faculty
member since 1973, specializes in victims of crime, hate crimes,
family violence and child abuse, including the modus operandi
of predatory pedophiles, as well as German criminal law and
procedure.
Teske said he had not anticipated his appointment to the editorial
advisory board, adding that he believes this is the first
time anyone from SHSU has received such appointment.
“It is normally made by the board as an honor acknowledging
scholarly accomplishments and publications,” he said.
The journal is the flagship journal of the American Society
of Criminology, founded in 1954.
