Authors To Discuss
Advocate, Walker County Native
In honor of women’s history month and the 50th anniversary
of Brown vs. the Board of Education, authors Harold L. Smith
and Judith N. McArthur will discuss their book “Minnie
Fisher Cunningham: A Suffragist’s Life in Politics.”
The event will be held on Thursday (March 25) from 4-6 p.m.
in the Olson Auditorium and again from 7-9 p.m. in the Walker
Education Center. A reception and book signing will immediately
follow in the Walker Education Center.
Cunningham, a Walker County native and advocate for the “common
people,” led the way for women to be counted as “equal
political beings.”
An advocate of equal rights and the Brown versus Board of
Education, the Supreme Court decision that "separate
educational facilities are inherently unequal," she was
a Texas delegate during the 1956 national Democratic Convention.
In addition, she fought for the ratification of the 19th Amendment,
was founder and first secretary of the National League of
Women Voters, was the first Texas woman to run for the U.S.
Senate and ran for governor in 1944.
The event is sponsored by the history department, Sam Houston
Memorial Museum, the Elliott T. Bowers Honors Program, Walker
County Historical Commission and the political science department.

UH Prof To Speak
On Houston School Integration
Guadalupe San Miguel, associate professor of history at
the University of Houston, will discuss his book “Brown,
Not White: School Integration and the Chicano Movement in
Houston,” on Wednesday (March 24) at 5 p.m. in the Olson
Auditorium.
“Brown, Not White” focuses on the Houston Independent
School District’s 1970 attempt to desegregate the school
system by classifying Mexican-American children as “white”
and integrate them with African-American children.
The book traces the Mexican-origin community’s quest
for educational equality, marked by strikes, boycotts, rallies
and litigation during this era.
San Miguel is also the author of “Let All Of Them Take
Heed: Mexican Americans and the Campaign for Educational Equality
in Texas, 1910-1981” and “Tejano Proud: Tex-Mex
Music in the Twentieth Century.”
The speech is free and open to the public. For more information,
call the history
department at 936.294.1487 or 936.294.1491.

Workshop To Counsel On
Anxiety, Stress Management
The SHSU Counseling Center will host an anxiety and stress
management workshop on Tuesday (March 23) from 9-11 a.m.
The workshop will give students the opportunity to learn stress
management tips and how to cope with the anxieties of having
stress in their lives, according to Pamela McManus, interim
director of the Counseling Center.
McManus said she is very optimistic about the event because
everyone can relate to having stress in their lives.
“Stress is a big problem in life for everyone,”
she said. “Students should learn to cope with stress
now because it is a lifelong problem for most people.”
There is no sign-up deadline for the workshop, but McManus
encourages everyone to signup as soon as possible.
“Signing up is preferred because of the limited space
we have in the center,” she said. “Acting now
will ensure they have a space and someone to work with when
they show up.”
The free workshop will be held at the Counseling Center, across
from the Lee Drain Building and next to the Farrington Building.
For more information, or to sign-up, call 936.294.1720 or
visit the Counseling
Center Web site.
