SHSU Update For Week Of May 2

Office Accepting McNair Applications

Applications for the second cohort of the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program will be accepted until June 4.

The McNair program will award students a $1,600 stipend during the summer semester, while conducting research. Participants will also receive paid travel to research conferences, as well as a tuition waiver for a 3 credit-hour spring research course.

Students will participate in a series of informational workshops during the fall semester, including research and computer workshops, SAM Center workshops, a GRE prep course and information on financial aid and the graduate school application process. In addition, students may be provided with graduate school application fee waivers for some programs.

Those interested may be accepted into the program one of two ways: they may qualify as a first-generation college student and meet income guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Education, or be a member of an ethnic group that is underrepresented in graduate education.

The U.S. Government currently defines “underrepresented groups” specifically as Native American, Native Alaskan, Hispanic or African-American. Students must be a U.S. citizen or be a permanent U. S. residenct and have junior status by Sept. 1, 2004, with a cumulative SHSU grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

The McNair program was established by the U.S. Department of Education in 1989 in honor of Ronald E. McNair. It is designed to provide talented low-income, first-generation and ethnic minority undergraduate students with effective preparation for doctoral study.

The McNair program at Sam Houston State University encourages graduate studies by providing opportunities for undergraduates to define their goals, engage in research, and develop the skills and faculty mentor relationships that are critical to success at the doctoral level.

Applications may be picked up in the McNair Office, in Academic Building 3 Room 216. For more information about the program call Lydia Fox or Edwina Reece at 936.294.3279.

Apple Days To Give Students Food, Supplies For Finals

To help students during final exams, the SHSU Parents’ Association will hand out free apples, candy and Scantrons on May 3-4 in the Lowman Student Center Mall Area, from 8:30 a.m. until supplies run out each day.

Each semester, the Parents’ Association hosts two Apple Days, giving out more than 1,200 apples, several cases of candy, and 5,000 Scantrons to students to give students a treat before finals.

The SHSU Parents’ Association understands that the end of the semester is a stressful time for students, and the event is designed to offer support during final exams, projects, etc., according to Parents’ Association advisor Mary Ellen Sims.

“It is a pleasure to see the surprised look on the students’ faces when they are offered apples, candy and Scantrons – all for free,” said Kelly Clements, president of the association.

The Parents’ Association is an organization of Sam Houston parents who actively support students throughout the year, by raising funds from member dues and the sale of merchandise for its annual scholarships. The association co-sponsors Parents’ Weekend each fall semester, welcomes new Bearkat parents during New Student Orientation each summer, as well as sponsors Apple Days and awards six $1,000 scholarships each year.

For more information about membership, volunteering with the association or scholarships, call Clements at 903.581.5224 or e-mail at jkclements@tyler.net. For general information call Sims, assistant dean of students, at 936.294.3026 or e-mail at mesims@shsu.edu.

Student Services Reunites Past Organization Leaders

Student Services Luncheon
Thelma Douglass, vice president for Student Services, addresses the group of 30 present and former student leaders reunited at a luncheon.

Thelma Douglass, vice president for Student Services, recently hosted a reunion luncheon for 30 past and present Sam Houston State University student organization leaders.

James F. Gaertner, SHSU president, encouraged students to continue their hard work and to give back to those who provided time and resources in support of their efforts to achieve. In addition, Student Government Association president Angie Cartwright expressed her thanks to her fellow organization leaders for their hard work and their Bearkat spirit.

"These gatherings are an excellent opportunity for us to get to know the student leaders and to learn why they came to Sam Houston State University," said Douglass. "It is also important that students know they have a voice on campus and that the administration is listening."

Douglass said several suggestions from such meetings have been implemented during Gaertner’s administration.

Outdoor Recreation To Push Your ‘Pedal Power’

The Outdoor Recreation division of the Department of Recreational Sports will give the SHSU community an opportunity the push their pedal power with a mountain bike trip at Lake Bryan on May 4.
