SHSU
Update For Week Of May 9
Signups Under Way for
Mickey's Memorial Tourney
Not all great music events are held in concert halls.
One of the most noteworthy of Sam Houston State University's
School of Music is held on a golf course each year. Mickey's
Memorial Golf Tournament is scheduled for June 18 at the Wedgewood
Golf Course in Conroe. Entry deadline is June 11.
The tournament is held in honor of the late music professor-composer
Fisher A. "Mickey" Tull, distinguished professor
of music at Sam Houston State University, and has been a successful
raiser of music scholarship funds and good will since 1996.
In addition to great fun for a worthy cause, participants
will have the chance to win a car for a hole-in-one, and there
will be trophies for long drive (men and women), closest to
the pin (men and women), farthest from the hole, and for 1st,
2nd, and 3rd place teams.
Format for the event is a four-person scramble. Play is scheduled
to begin with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Players may enter as
members of teams or individually, to be placed on a team.
The entry fee of $99 per player includes practice balls, cart,
refreshments and lunch. Hosting this year's event will be
Charlotte Tull and Rod Cannon, chair of the SHSU school of
music.
For those unable to play in the fund-raiser, sponsorships
are also available at $100 per hole, with advertisements on
a tee box, and $99 to sponsor a music/student golfer as a
"designated hitter." Direct contributions to the
scholarship fund are also appreciated.
Participants who contact Cannon at 936.294.3808 by June 11
will be sent a map, score card and course layout.

Conroy Testifies Before
State Senate Committee
Mary Alice Conroy, associate professor of psychology and
director of clinical training for the forensic clinical psychology
program, recently testified before the Texas Senate Jurisprudence
Committee regarding the insanity defense.
Conroy’s testimony was given regarding the insanity
defense and the committee’s consideration to pass legislation
on the issue. As a forensic psychologist, she has previously
served on a senate taskforce on forensic issues and is currently
chair of the Texas Psychological Association Forensic Special
Interest Group.
“I tried to make clear to the committee the complexity
of those issues, some of the available empirical data they
should examine and the interdisciplinary nature of the problem
to be addressed,” Conroy said about her testimony, adding
that because she testified as a TPA representative, her personal
position wasn’t given.
Interest in the matter has stemmed from the high-publicity
cases that have caught public and political attention, such
as the Andrea Yates and Deanna Laney decisions, according
to Conroy.
“The recent case of a man found NGRI (not guilty by
reason of insanity) in 1996 for killing his sister, subsequently
going off his medication, and recently killing his girlfriend’s
child was an important issue in considering changes in how
those found NGRI are managed,” she said.
Legislation under consideration could make significant changes
in the way in which insanity is evaluated, the qualifications
of evaluators and the way individuals found “not guilty
by reason of insanity” are treated following the verdict.
“Carefully crafted legislation could be very positive
in making certain justice is served, in protecting the public,
in assuring due process rights for defendants, and in assuring
persons with mental illness receive appropriate treatment,”
Conroy said.

Psychology, Philosophy
Wins Kaldi’s Contest
The department of psychology and philosophy won the first
Kaldi’s Coffee House Trivia Contest by a “landslide,
amidst really tough competition from other departments,”
according to department chair Donna Desforges.
The contest, designed as “department happy hours”
at the café, pitted all 24 of SHSU’s departments
against one another.
After each department played their Trivial Pursuit game,
a "final round competition" was held on May 6 between
the eight highest scoring departments.
As the winner of the finals competition, the psychology and
philosophy department received a $100 donation, and each participant
from the winning team received a complimentary latté.
