SHSU Update For Week Of Oct. 10

 

Homecoming Week Includes ‘Birthday Bash,’ Parade

SHSU will have an abundance of activities for students and alumni as the 125th ‘birthday bash’ is celebrated during the 2004 Homecoming week.

The week will officially kick off on Monday (Oct. 11) with a rally at noon in the Lowman Student Center Mall Area.

On Tuesday, the President's Office will host a 125th anniversary ceremony, beginning at 11 a.m. at Austin Hall, where faculty, staff and students will march through campus with the Bearkat Band at 11:30 a.m., and a panoramic photo of the university community will be taken at noon on Intramural Field No. 2.

The birthday bash-themed Homecoming parade will be held on Wednesday from 7-8 p.m. Participants should line up in the parking lot across from Academic Building 3 at 5 p.m. The parade will travel down Sam Houston Avenue and around the campus, where it will end at the Sam Jam Carnival in the Bowers Stadium parking lot.

Entries for the parade are open to both campus and community organizations. Those who want their floats to be judged should register with the Office of Student Activites.

On Friday, the class of 1954 will be honored at 11 a.m. at the Golden Circle Reunion, and the Distinguished Alumni Gala will take place at 6 p.m. in the LSC Ballroom.

Saturday activities include: open houses and receptions throughout the morning, with college open houses in their administration buildings at 10 a.m.; SHSU president James Gaertner’s “Pre-Game With the President” meet and greet at 11 a.m. in Austin Hall; and the Lettermen Association’s Hall of Honor Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. in the LSC Ballroom.

The university-wide party will continue at noon in the Bowers Stadium parking lot with Bearkat fans and alumni tailgating in Bearkat Alley. There will be food, music and activities for individuals of all ages prior to the football game at 2 p.m. between SHSU and Nicholls State.

Teacher Job Fair Attracts 83 Districts, Services

Approximately 83 school districts and educational services will be represented at the Fall Teacher Job Fair on Wednesday (Oct. 13) at 12:30 p.m. in the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.

Districts, of all sizes and from across the state, that will be in attendance include Abilene, Bryan, Conroe, Galveston, Huntsville, Round Rock, San Antonio and Killeen, as well as many Houston- and Dallas-area schools.

In addition, Sam Houston graduate studies; Regions three, six, 10 and 20; the Harris County Department of Education and the Japanese Exchange will have representatives in attendance.

Athletics To Celebrate Basketball Season With ‘Mayhem’

In celebration of the beginning of the Bearkat basketball season, the athletic department will host “Midnight Mayhem” on Friday (Oct. 15), from 10:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. in the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.

“ Starting at midnight, the (men’s and women’s) teams are officially allowed to practice as a team again,” said Chris Park, athletic development coordinator, “so leading up to the midnight introductions of both the teams, there will be special games and contests and student organizations will be playing each other in three-on-three contests.”

Following the introductions of both teams at midnight, the women’s team will scrimmage for about 10 minutes, and the men’s team will scrimmage for about 10 minutes.

“ The highlight after that is that there’s going to be a slam dunk show and a hot-shot competition between the men’s and women’s teams,” Park said.

To enter the coliseum, students will have to go to the B-side gates, door No. 13, for the free event.

Rec Sports To ‘Raven Run’ For Homecoming

The Department of Recreational Sports will host its annual Raven Run on Saturday (Oct. 16) morning.
Registration will be held from 8-8:45 a.m., with the race beginning at 9 a.m. in the faculty/staff parking lot east of the Health and Kinesiology Center.

The 5K, or 3.1 miles, race is $5 for pre-registration or $7 for race-day registration. Those who pre-register will receive a Raven Run T-shirt.

The race will be held for participants in four divisions: student, alumni, faculty/staff and student organizations. Student organizations will receive Homecoming spirit points by pre-registering and participating.

In addition to the running course, there will also be a non-competitive one-mile walking course.

Pre-registration forms can be picked up and turned in at the Recreational Sports office, in HKC Room 104, and is due by 5 p.m. on Oct. 14.

Freshmen Micahela Fulton and April Ehlers got the “best seats in the house” after winning the drawings for VIP suite boxes at the Sept. 18 and Oct. 7, respectively, SHSU football games.

Students can enter to win the three remaining giveaways by completing entry forms at the Barnes and Noble University Bookstore or the Bearkat OneCard office. Entries may also be completed at Bowers Stadium for the next drawing.

For each home game, one winner will be drawn from that week's entries and will receive six passes to the suite box at Bowers Stadium with VIP parking passes, as well as free access to the buffet and refreshments served at the suite boxes.

The remaining drawings will be held for the Oct. 16, Nov. 6 and Nov. 20 games.

Roberts Selected As Barbara L. Jackson Scholar

Sam Houston State University Office of Multicultural and International Student Services coordinator and doctoral student Jennifer Roberts has been selected as a Barbara L. Jackson Scholar to represent the university at the University Council for Educational Administration National Convention in November.

Roberts was nominated for the honor by Theodore Creighton, director of the Center for Research and Doctoral Studies in Educational Leadership.

The Barbara L. Jackson Scholars “represent a cadre of outstanding students of color enrolled in UCEA member educational leadership and policy doctoral programs who intend to enter the professorate,” according to a nomination request from the organization.

The program, launched this fall, is named in honor of Barbara L. Jackson, a professor and leading scholar, for her contributions to the discipline.

As part of the program, each Jackson Scholar will be paired with an experienced mentor to help prepare them for entry into higher education.

As a selected student, Roberts will travel to Kansas City for the convention from Nov. 12-14, where she will be formally recognized and have the opportunity to network with colleagues from other institutions.

Archaeology Month To Kick Off With Lecture

The Sam Houston Memorial Museum will celebrate Texas Archaeology Month with a presentation, "Denbigh: Archaeology of a Civil War Blockade Runner."

J. Barto Arnold, of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology at Texas A & M University will lecture on the Denbigh project on Tuesday (Oct. 19) at 7 p.m. at the Katy & E. Don Walker, Sr., Education Center, at 1402 19th St.

The Denbigh was one of the most successful blockade runners of the American Civil War and was the last to clear a Confederate port. It is the only blockade-runner to be excavated in the Gulf of Mexico, and the remains of the ship are situated off Galveston Island.

Workshop To Help Perfect Punctuation Skills

The Writing Center will give students “simple steps for perfecting your punctuation” on Wednesday (Oct. 13).

The workshop, directed by graduate and undergraduate-level tutors Nate Roberts, Michelle Fortune and David Sweeten, will review the basics of punctuation in a friendly, non-threatening environment, at 10 a.m.

SAM Center To Prepare Students For GRE, GMAT

The Student Advising and Mentoring Center will host a series to prepare students for the Graduate Record Exam and the Graduate Management Admission Test beginning Monday (Oct. 11).

The seven-day review will be held from 5-7 p.m. at the SAM Center, in Academic Building 4 Suite 210, and those who wish to participate must attend every session.

“ We cover strategies for the GRE, GMAT review, so there’s math, there’s English, time management, there’s a million different things,” said Bernice Strauss, SAM Center director of academic support programs. “The testing company recommends 50 hours of individual review.”

The review is held on a first-come, first-serve basis and groups are kept small, Strauss said.

Those who would like to participate should meet Strauss beforehand.

The review will be held on Oct. 22-23 at the University Center, with the sessions lasting all day Saturday.

Students To ‘Dance At 8’

Dance majors and non-majors will showcase their talents at “Dances@8” on Tuesday and Wednesday (Oct. 12-13) nights. Performances will begin at 8 p.m. each day in the Academic Building 3 Theatre.

The event, sponsored by the Chi Tau Epsilon national dance honor society, will include hip-hop, tap, jazz, modern dance and ballet, according to Chi Tau Epsilon president Sarah Pilgrim.

“ They are all student choreographed, and it’s (the event is) a whole genre of dances,” Pilgrim said.
Admission is $5, and proceeds from the performances will benefit the organization, which uses the funds to provide a dance choreography scholarship to one student during the spring semester.

Outdoor Rec To Go Mountain Biking, Climbing

The Outdoor Recreations division of Recreational Sports will take participants mountain biking at Double Lake on Monday (Oct. 11). The trip will be from 4-8 p.m.

“ Double Lake 's trail is fast and fun and a good place for beginners to practice mountain biking,” according to the Outdoor Recreation Web site.

The cost of the event is $15 for students, $17 for staff/faculty and $20 for guests and includes transportation, park entry and bike rental.

The sign-up deadline, and pre-trip meeting, is Monday at 3:30 p.m. Those who wish to participate should sign up in Health and Kinesiology Center Room 104, and the pre-trip meeting will be held at the Outdoor Recreation Building.

That weekend (Oct. 15-17), Outdoor Recreation will also take participants to “The Granite Gripper Climbing Competition” at Enchanted Rock.

“ Climbers take over the group camping area and pavilion during a unique, outdoor climbing competition,” according to the Web site.

The cost to attend is $25 for students, $30 for staff/faculty and $35 for guests, which includes four meals, transportation, camping and gear, but does not include registration for the competition.

The sign-up deadline and pre-trip meeting for this event will be on Oct. 13 at 5 p.m. in HKC Room 104.

PC To Entertain During Homecoming Week

The Program Council will host a variety of events this week in conjunction with Homecoming week.
On Monday, Damian the Hypnotist will entertain the student body at 6 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom. Homecoming spirit points will be awarded to those who attend.

On Tuesday, students will have the opportunity to design and paint their own Homecoming memento in the form of a ceramic mug with “PC Ceramics: Glazin' Over Sam” at 12:30 p.m. in the LSC Mall Area. Later that evening, students can "Get Your Bowl On” at Huntsville Lanes from 9 p.m. to midnight.

Finally, The second annual Sam Jam carnival will be held on Wednesday in the north parking area of Bowers Stadium following the Homecoming Parade. There will be live performances, rides and midway-type games, beginning at 8 p.m.
