Parents' Weekend To 'Make History'
It will be “history in the making” at this year’s
Parents’ Weekend, Sept. 17-19, sponsored by the Dean
of Students’ Office and the Parents’ Association.
The theme, which corresponds with Sam Houston State University’s
125th anniversary, will include gifts of disposable cameras
and picture frames for participants to “make their own
history,” according to Mary Ellen Sims, assistant dean
of students.
“We thought it would be appropriate because of the
historical significance of this year and because everybody
contributes to the history of the university,” Sims
said.
Though activities for parent and student participation will
begin on Friday, registration will held from 8:30 a.m. to
3:00 p.m. on Saturday in the Lowman Student Center Main Lobby.
Registration for a family is $10, no matter how many are included.
That morning, they will also sell football tickets for the
night game against the University of Montana, which will be
televised on Fox Sports Southwest.
Some of this year’s highlights on Saturday include
coffee with the administrators, from 9-10 a.m. in the LSC
Atrium; the Parents’ Association annual meeting, from
10-11 a.m. in LSC Room 320; and the newlywed style “Generation
Gap” game show, from 1:30-3 p.m. in the LSC Theater.
In addition, SHSU history associate professor Ty Cashion
will discuss his latest book, “SHSU—125 Years
of History” from 11 a.m. to noon in LSC Room 320. Afterwards,
Cashion will be available to sign books.
That evening, the pre-game party will kick off with a classic
car cruise-in at the north lot of Bowers Stadium and will
officially begin at 5 p.m. The pre-game party, sponsored by
the Office of Student Activities, will include free food and
drinks, as well as music and other entertainment.
The weekend will end on Sunday morning, with an interdenominational
Christian worship service from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in the Farrington
Building Pit. In case of rain, the service will be held at
the Wesley Foundation Chapel.
“The whole idea is to just give parents and students
some things they can do together,” Sims said. “It’s
a lot less structured of a weekend than Saturdays at Sam and
orientation. Some people like to do everything, and some people
want to be on their own with their student.”
