President's Golf Tournament is April 17
One
of the official events in this year's celebration of the 125th
anniversary of the founding of Sam Houston Normal Institute
is the 2004 President's Golf Tournament. Thursday, April 15,
is the entry deadline.
"We have a number of serious presentations planned to
mark this historic occasion," said James F. Gaertner,
SHSU president, "such as appearances by distinguished
alum Dan Rather, historian James Haley, and a visit by Gov.
Rick Perry.
"While these activities will be entertaining and historical,
the
organizers decided to have a little recreational fun, and
thought a golf tournament at the wonderful new Raven Nest
golf course would be the perfect event.."
The tournament will be a "competitive" four-person
scramble. That's the way President Gaertner, who is an avid
and serious golfer, wanted the tournament to be set up.
There will be prizes for two levels of teams, but there will
be no mulligans sold.
"One of the ways we try to approach everything we do
at Sam Houston State University is to be 'first class',"
said Gaertner, "and this will be a first class golf tournament."
Crystal trophies will be awarded for closest to the pin on
one par 3, for longest drive on another hole, and for the
top three teams in two flights. The winning team will take
home a silver-plated traveling President's Cup.
Hole-in-one prizes will be offered on all par 3s. They include
a Buick Rendezvous, a Ford F-150, two tickets to the Masters
golf tournament, a set of Nike Pro Combo Irons, a Nike forged
titanium driver, and three dozen Power Distance Super Soft
Golf Balls.
The registration fee of $125 per player, or $500 per team,
includes a continental breakfast, range balls, tournament
mementos, team photo, the prizes, a post-round luncheon, beverages
and snacks on the course, and a goody bag with balls, snacks,
and several useful items of golfing paraphernalia. There will
also be attractive door prizes.
Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. with shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
The Raven Nest Golf Course is located on I-45 just north of
Huntsville Memorial Hospital.
Sponsorships are also available. The sponsorship
form and entry
form are available online for mailing or faxing to Maggie
Babcock. For more information, contact
