Update For Week Of Sept. 12
Volunteerism: A ‘Press’-ing Matter
 Political analyst and MSNBC contributor Bill Press will
address “Volunteerism:
How Giving Back Pays Off Big” via satellite on Sept.
14 as part of the Society of Success and Leadership” speaker
series.
The broadcast will be held from 6-7 p.m. in Academic Building
1 Room 213.
In addition to sharing his views on volunteerism, Press will
discuss how to translate the political “spin” into
human terms, the many ways volunteerism can help the country
and will explore the power of the human voice and voting.
By sharing the everyday life lessons Press has gleaned from
working in politics and government, students will learn the
benefits and importance of becoming socially and politically
aware, according to a Society news release.
The former host of CNN’s “Crossfire” and “The
Spin Room,” Press’ career in government, politics
and broadcasting has spanned more than two decades.
He was chairman of the California Democratic Party from 1993-1996,
chief of staff to California State Senator Peter Behr and
director of the California Office of Planning and Research
under Gov.
Jerry Brown and has also managed several local and state
political campaigns.
He has also received numerous awards for his work, including
four Emmys and a Golden Mic Award. The Associated Press named
him “Best Commentator of the Year” in 1992.
Press earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Niagara University
and an S.T.B. from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland.

Career Expo To Include Over 96 Companies
Students looking
for jobs or internships should bring their resumes and a
smile to the 2004 Career Expo on Wednesday
(Sept. 15).
The event, sponsored by Career Services, will be held from
10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
Representatives from approximately 96 companies and schools
will be on hand seeking students from all disciplines for
positions in business, law enforcement, scientific fields,
construction,
agriculture and government agencies, among others.
Companies planning to attend include: U.S. Department of
State/Diplomatic Security, Sigma-Aldrich, Spherion@Dell,
Texas Department of
Banking, Dillard’s Inc., Farmers Insurance, American
Express Financial Services, Sprint, Cingular Wireless, Woodforest
National Bank and TNT North America.
In addition, colleges such as University of North Texas,
University of Houston-Clear Lake, University of Houston,
North Harris
Montgomery Community College and Parker College of Chiropractic,
among others, will bring information about their graduate
or specialized programs.

Huntsville Auction To Benefit SHSU, Mission
Items being auctioned
in this month’s regular downtown
auction will benefit Sam Houston State University’s
health and kinesiology students, as well as the Good Shepard
Mission.
The auction, held on the third Thursday of the month, is
scheduled for Sept. 16, at 6:30 p.m. at the Old Town Theatre.
A preview
of the auction items will begin at 4:30 p.m.
The health and kinesiology department will offer a wide
variety of sport memorabilia, home exercise equipment and
instructional
services to the highest bidder, according to Bob Case,
health and kinesiology professor.
Monies generated during this portion of the auction will
be utilized for undergraduate and graduate scholarships.
Instructional services being auctioned by the departmental
faculty and students include: bass fishing, Bob Case; baseball,
Mark Gaus; bowling, Amy Samuelson; catfishing, Roy Moss;
fitness assessment, Bill Hyman; golf, Brady Foore; personal
trainers,
Gary Oden, Kristen Picard and Jenna Zboril; and tennis,
Robert Cantrell.
Consignment items, including an antique roll-top desk,
china, carpet, dining room chairs, tables, office equipment,
collectibles,
living room furniture, lamps, porch chairs, artworks and
professional groupings, will be accepted through Wednesday.

Workshop To Teach Writing Essentials
The SHSU Writing Center
will host four workshops during September to help students
in various aspects of written
works.
On Monday (Sept. 13), Frances Fenessey and Urania Fung
will help students go “From Idea To Thesis Statement,” at
2 p.m. This session teaches students how to select a paper
topic, define the focus and write a convincing thesis statement.
How to make an essay flow will be the topic of “Organizational
Strategies For Successful Papers,” which will be
held on Sept. 20, at noon.
This workshop, conducted by Kim McCullough, Katie Magourik
and Tosh Kamei, compares the relationship between thesis
and topic sentences and discusses strategies such as transitions,
repetition and parallel structures to help papers flow.
On Sept. 28, Ritu Raju and Lucia Liu will discuss the resources
available and particular strategies for ESL writers. This
workshop will be held at 1 p.m.
Not sure what a professor wants on an essay exam? On Sept.
30, the center will give “Essay Exam Strategies For
Success, at 2 p.m.
This workshop, conducted by Alice Marcom and Jennifer Ashley,
will prepare students for those exams by discussing how
to study, managing time during the exam, planning answers,
beginning
effectively and writing well-developed, coherent essays.
Workshops generally last 20 or 30 minutes and students
do not need to sign up beforehand. In addition, all workshops
are
held at the Writing Center, located in Wilson Building
Room
114.

Bruce’s Book
Gets ‘Armed’ With Prize
 A book by Robert Bruce, history assistant professor, has
been awarded the 2004 Tomlinson Book Prize, given by the
Western
Front Association.
“ A Fraternity of Arms: America and France in the Great War,” published
by the University Press of Kansas in 2003, was selected as the association’s
best work of history on the World War I era.
“
While most previous work on America’s participation in the Great War has
focused on alliance with Great Britain, Robert Bruce argues that the impact of
the Franco-American relationship was of far greater significance,” the
book description on the Kansas Press Web site said.
“
He makes a convincing case that the French, rather than the British, were the
main military partner of the United States in its brief but decisive participation
in the war—and that France deserves much credit for America’s
emergence as a world military power.”
The Tomlinson Prize is given annually to the best work of history on the
World War I era, and the winner is chosen by a panel comprised of an elite
group
of distinguished World War I scholars.
It is the most prestigious award in the field of First World War studies,
Bruce said, and the prize consists of a $3,000 check and a framed certificate.
In addition to this book, Bruce has written other books, articles, and essays
on various topics in U.S. history and French history.

PC To Celebrate Hispanic
Heritage, Discuss Cancer
The Program Council will be celebrating Hispanic
Heritage with a month full of activities, beginning on Sept.
15 with a kick-off rally.
The rally will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Lowman Student
Center Mall Area and will include a DJ playing Latin and
Hispanic music, Hispanic
foods,
piñatas,
a jalapeno-eating contest and many prizes.
On Sept. 28, the PC will sponsor Diabetes 101, at 12:30 p.m. in the LSC
Mall area. The informative program will include sugar-free snow cones
and gumballs,
as well as informational packets that tell students how diabetes affects
Hispanic Americans, according to Hispanic Heritage chair Suzanna Ortiz.
On Oct. 4-8, pieces reflecting Hispanic contributions to the art world
will be on display in the LSC Art Gallery, and the month will end with
Damian
the Hypnotist
on Oct. 11. Damian, who is of Hispanic descent, will hypnotize audience
members at 6 p.m. in the LSC Ballroom.
Also this week, the PC will host “Cancer Awareness: I am aware,” on
Sept. 16 at 11 a.m. in the LSC Mall Area.
The event, held in conjunction with Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, whose philanthropy
is breast cancer, will include give-a-ways such as T-shirts, pink ribbons
and cancer information.
“
We want to make people aware that breast cancer not only affects women, but it
affects men too because nine times out of 10 there’s a mother, a wife,
a sister, or a daughter that gets it,” said Trapper Pace, PC programming
chair. “It’s not just a disease for women, but a disease
for men as well because there is a small percentage of men who get breast
cancer.”
Finally, Michael Dean Ester will provide some comic relief on Sept. 17,
with PC ComicView, at 8 p.m. in the LSC Theatre.

SHSU Golden Key Receives
Chapter Award
The SHSU chapter of Golden Key International Honour Society
was awarded the prestigious Key Chapter Award at the August
2004 Golden Key International
Conference in Atlanta,
Ga.
The award honors chapters are selected for excelling in five major
areas: communication, publicity, meeting management, chapter activities
and
leadership, as well as
in participation in regional and international programs.
This year, the SHSU chapter exemplified outstanding teamwork, dedication
and collaboration with other student organizations on their campus.
In addition, the chapter was engaged in a combination of service, academic
social and
fundraising
activities throughout the year, according to Simone M. Williams, Golden
Key staff member.
All chapters may apply for the award, but only the “most outstanding” chapter
is selected to receive the honor. William Green and Valerie Muehsam
serve as advisors for the SHSU chapter.
With more than 350 chapters around the world, Golden Key was founded
in 1977 in Atlanta to recognize juniors and seniors in the top 15 percent
of their
class. More than 800 delegates from 335 colleges and universities in
six
countries gathered
for the four-day conference this year.
