Scholarships Available for TDCJ Employees

Scholarships are now available to Texas Department of Criminal Justice employees who are accepted into the Sam Houston State University Master’s of Criminal Justice Management Weekend Program.

The scholarships are being awarded through the university's College of Criminal Justice in partnership with the Correctional Management Institute of Texas.

The Master's of Science in Criminal Justice Management weekend program has been in existence since 1981.

"Since the program's inception police officers have received scholarships from the 100 Club. There is no such support for correctional officers," said Wes Johnson, associate dean of the College of Criminal Justice.

"This agreement builds upon the vision of Dr. George Beto, past director of TDCJ and dean of the College of Criminal Justice, sustaining cooperation between the two agencies and promoting the development of highly trained correctional executives," he explained.

SHSU and the Correctional Management Institute will select scholarship winners from a list of nominated employees provided by TDCJ. To qualify under TDCJ’s criteria, employees must have at least 10 years of service with the agency. They must also have demonstrated agency leadership and have been recognized for outstanding performance in a current performance evaluation.

The scholarships will cover tuition only. Selected employees will be responsible for books, fees and other related costs.

Continued financial support for employees selected for scholarships will be contingent upon their ability to maintain at least a 3.3 grade point average and completing the degree program in two years. At least two classes must be completed each semester as required by the Master's of Criminal Justice curriculum.

A memorandum of understanding outlining the scholarship program was implemented earlier this year by Richard Ward, dean of the College of Criminal Justice; Dan Richard Beto, executive director of the Correctional Management Institute of Texas; and Gary Johnson, executive director of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Witnesses included James Gaertner, president of SHSU; Lois W. Kolkhorst, state representative; David Payne, vice president for academic affairs and provost of SHSU; and Johnson.

For more information about the scholarships, employees should contact the TDCJ human resources department.
