How Sam Stacks Up in Statewide Enrollment
Sam Houston State University's seven percent fall enrollment
increase was the highest in Texas for any university
of the same size or larger.
This is according to unofficial enrollment totals compiled
by the SHSU Office of Institutional Research.
Other schools in the Texas State University System had mixed
results. Texas State University -San Marcos, with 26,799
students, had an increase of two percent, and Lamar University,
with 10,804 students, had a four percent increase.
The largest decrease in the state found by Institutional
Research was eight percent at Sul Ross State, although the
Sul Ross Rio Grande campus in Laredo increased by 11 percent
to 1,056
students.
Totals for other universities not in the Texas State University
System were also mixed. Stephen F. Austin State dropped to
11,287, or minus one percent, while Texas Woman's University
increased to 10,750 students, or 11 percent.
Three of four University of Houston System schools stayed
essentially the same, with an increase of four percent, to
11,408, at UH Downtown.
Both of the state's large universities were down slightly--the
University of Texas by two percent to 50,403, and Texas A&M
by one percent to 44,521.
Two smaller universities in the Sam Houston State University
area--Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M, both recorded
seven percent increases.
