Department, Class To Sponsor Hoops For Hearts
The health and kinesiology department and Robert Case’s
undergraduate administrative class will host several events
to benefit the American Heart Association on Friday and Saturday
(Feb. 27-28), including a Hoops For Hearts three-on-three
basketball tournament and silent and live auctions.
The three-on-three tournament will begin on Friday morning
with a preliminary tournament for men’s, women’s
and co-rec teams in the Health and Kinesiology Center Gym.
The tournament, which is open to teams of four students, faculty
and staff in any combination, will consist of 15 minutes of
play, or 10 points, for each game.
Co-rec teams consist of combination men-women teams with at
least two women on the floor at all times, according to Case,
professor and chair of the health and kinesiology department.
The championship games for the men’s and women’s
teams will be held on Saturday during the SHSU-Stephen F.
Austin halftime for the respective gender’s basketball
team.
During Saturday’s doubleheader, there will be a silent
auction in the corridor around the concourse of the Bernard
G. Johnson Coliseum. Approximately 40 sponsors have donated
items for the auction, and prizes will include golf for four
and a manicure, Case said.
Case, an auctioneer, will also have a live auction during
the halftime of the men’s game. The two items to be
auctioned off include a 27-inch flat screen color TV, with
a built-in DVD and VHS player donated by Ward’s Furniture
and Flooring and a group of power tools from Home Depot.
Last year, an auctioned TV raised $1,200 for the AHA, Case
said.
“During each halftime we will also be doing a ‘pass
the hat bucket brigade’ collection plate,” Case
said. “Students will be dressed in hoops for hearts
shirts from the American Heart Association and they’ll
be passing plates around the audience so they can throw in
a quarter, a nickel or a dollar bill if they want to for the
AHA.
"Last year we collected $1,000 at halftime," he
said.
The cost to participate in the basketball tournament is $20
per team, or $5 per person, and the entry deadline is Wednesday
(Feb. 25). Entry forms can be picked up and dropped off on
the second floor of the HKC, in the department of Recreational
Sports Office or in Case’s office in HKC Room 218.
Playing times for teams will be posted no later than Thursday
(Feb. 26), and the preliminary tournament is expected to run
no later than 1 p.m., depending on the number of entries,
Case said.
