Travel With SH Offers Trips With President, Wife

Travel with Sam Houston is accepting applications for two opportunities to spend time outside of the university setting with SHSU’s president and his wife during tours in Scotland and France.

University president James F. Gaertner will be the host of a trip that will return to the birthplace of golf with the Travel with SH Scotland Golf Tour next August.

The eight-day, seven-night tour will allow participants to tee off at famous courses in Scotland, including Kingbarns and Carnoustie in St. Andrews, St. Andrews New in Edinburgh, and Prestwick and Ailsa Course in Ayrshire.

“ The president is reaching out to alumni and friends of Sam Houston in many ways, including traveling with them,” said Grettle Payne, Travel with SH coordinator.

“ This is a new concept for Sam Houston, building the Sam Houston community as we travel,” she said. “Traveling with Sam Houston is not just another trip but it is an experience - something unique, something not available to other travelers, time with people you would otherwise not have any occasion to enjoy."

Non-golfers can opt to spend the days sight-seeing historic towns, castles and distilleries through private guides. Golfers can also tag along between rounds, Payne said.

The cost for the trip, to be held Aug. 7-14, is $3,852 for the land package, plus golf fees, and applications and a $700 deposit will be due by Jan. 31.

The cost includes airport transfers; seven nights accommodations; full Scottish breakfasts daily and two group dinners; five rounds of golf, subject to availability; daily mini coach tours with guide for non-golfer; and golf and sites entrance tickets.

A month later, Nancy Gaertner will host a “Cook’s Tour” to Provence, France, a 10-day, eight-night trip that will include tours and two cooking classes in Nice, Aix, St. Remy, Les Baux, Arles, Vence and Antibes.

The trip, to be held from Sept. 13-22, is $3,495 for a land and air package, which also includes eight nights hotel accommodations; eight buffet breakfasts, six lunches and two dinners; entrance fees to all sites and excursions; two cooking classes; private deluxe motorcoach for all tours and transfers; baggage handling for one bag and a tour manager throughout.

The application and a $500 deposit will be due May 1, with the final payment being due June 1.
