Homecoming Sub-Committees Plan For 'Birthday Bash'
Some significant changes are in store for this
year’s Homecoming celebration with the creation of three
new sub-committees to the Homecoming Planning Committee: the
Parade Committee, the Promotional Committee and the Pre-Game
Activities Committee.
“I decided to split the committee into sub-committees
because I felt that it would be much more effective to get
everyone involved in a sub-committee,” said Robert Barragan,
chairman of the Homecoming Planning Committee.
Each new sub-committee allows for a more tightly focused planning
time on their respective areas. Trevor Thorn, chairman of
the Parade sub-committee said that the decision to split the
Homecoming Activities Planning into sub-committees has “proven
to be valuable.”
“It has allowed for more focus on the individual events
which should provide precise planning for a well thought out
event,” he said. “Rather than one committee spending
three hours planning, three different committees can each
spend one hour planning, with more of a focus on one event.”
One of the biggest changes being made to the Homecoming festivities
is moving the parade to Wednesday evening as opposed to Saturday
morning as it had been in past years.
“The thinking was that many students go to the SamJam
festivities and by having the parade immediately preceeding
SamJam, and on a Wednesday night, more students would participate,”
said Thorn. “Furthermore, it would ease some of the
strain on the number of activities that are already planned
for Saturday morning.”
The theme of this year’s Homecoming festivities is set
to be “Birthday Bash” to coincide with the university’s
125th anniversary. The Promotions sub-committee is in charge
of designing a new logo that combines a birthday cake and
the 125th anniversary logo. The logo will be featured on stickers
as well as banners placed around the campus. The pre-game
committee will now be in charge of coordinating activities
taking place before the afternoon game. For more information
