Three Sam Houston State University graduates who have made notable contributions to the education field and the State Legislature, in business and to NASA will be honored as Distinguished Alumni on Friday, Oct. 7, as part of the university's 2005 homecoming festivities.

The honorees include State Representative Glenda Dawson; Joseph L. “Bud” Haney, founder, president and chief financial officer of Profiles International; and William Dan Womack, the retired assistant to the director of space and life sciences for the Space Shuttle Program.

The Distinguished Alumni Gala will take place at 6 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom. Tickets are $50 each or $400 to sponsor a table. For more information about the event, contact the SHSU Office of Alumni Relations at 936.294.1841.

Glenda Dawson

Glenda Dawson

A former teacher on both the public school and collegiate levels, Glenda Dawson is currently serving in the Texas House of Representatives for District 29, comprised of Matagorda County and the northern part of Brazoria County. She is a 1963 graduate with Bachelor of Business Administration degree, who also received a master’s degree from the University of Houston.

A twirler in the Bearkat band, secretary of her junior class and a senior class favorite, among other accolades, Dawson went from teaching at Pearland ISD and the University of Houston to working for both public and higher education in the 78th and 79th Legislatures.

Serving on the public education, public health and house appropriations committees during her first term, she was named “Outstanding Freshman Education Legislator” by the 78th Legislature. She currently serves on the higher education, public education, and public health committees.

Dawson, who has one daughter and two grandchildren, currently lives in Pearland.

Joseph L. “Bud” Haney

Bud Haney

The only athlete in SHSU’s history to make the first team all-America teams for four consecutive years in any sport, Joseph L. “Bud” Haney is a 1963 graduate with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in accounting.

The founder, president and chief financial officer of Profiles International, a Waco-based occupational assessment company, which now contributes upwards of $15 to $20 million to the local economy, Haney is also the co-author of “40 Strategies for Winning in Business.”

“I am keenly aware of his background as an extraordinary athlete as a College All American for four years while attending Sam Houston,” one nomination letter said. “This accomplishment was not only a personal achievement; it also clearly reflects the nurturing that he received at Sam Houston that inspired him to greater heights of achievement.

“ His unfortunate injury while playing professional major league baseball was clearly baseball’s loss, but conversely, it was a huge gain for our country’s private sector enterprises.”

He and his wife, Joan, have three sons. They live in Waco.

William Dan Womack

William Womack

William Dan Womack is a 1960 graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree who spent the majority of his career working with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

A recipient of the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal, Womack “took a degree in physics from SHSU to new heights,” a nomination letter said.

“ He was associated with NASA for 37 years and had scientific experiments on four Gemini missions and on lunar surface projects,” the letter continued. "He managed the Spacelab mission successfully flown in June '91. The last seven years with NASA, he was the Directorate representative for the Space Shuttle and other orbiter projects."

At the time of his retirement in 1998, Womack was the assistant to the director of space and life sciences for the Space Shuttle Program.

He and his wife, Jean, have four children and four grandchildren. They live in Guntersville, Ala.
