SHSU Update For Week Of April 3

Cavalry Regiment To Reenact Battles For Students

Are you fascinated by military history? The American Civil War? Texas history? The SHSU history department and the Sam Houston Memorial Museum will have members of the 11th Texas Cavalry Regiment on the museum grounds on Monday (April 4) as a special treat for history lovers.

Susannah Bruce's American Civil War graduate and undergraduate students, along with Caroline Crimm's Texas history undergraduate students, are working with a reenactment group to better understand the camp and battlefield experiences of Civil War soldiers.

Members of the cavalry regiment will work with students from 1-6 p.m. to teach basic drill and formations of Civil War soldiers, as well as instruct them in loading and firing era weapons.

U.S. History students, from HIS 163 and HIS 164 classes, will participate in the drill without weapons just as soldiers did in the 1860s. Upper-level undergraduate and graduate students will have the opportunity to handle and fire the weapons.

Regiment members will return for a second appearance during the annual Gen. Sam Houston Folk Festival April 22-23 to perform a battle demonstration, explain more about soldier life and much more.

Counseling Center To Screen For Alcohol Habits

The SHSU Counseling Center will offer free and confidential alcohol screenings to students on April 6 as part of the National Alcohol Screening Day. The screenings will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Counseling Center.

“ Each year, there are far too many incidents of assault, accident, sexual abuse, and even death related to the use of alcohol,” said Bill Metcalfe, Counseling Center director. “A recent study reveals that approximately 1400 students die each year because of alcohol.

“ Many students report academic consequences of their drinking that includes missing class, falling behind on assignments and doing poorly on exams, all resulting in lower grades,” he said.

The screening process involves a brief self-assessment that will ask about drinking habits and behaviors that have changed due to drinking.

Participants will have the opportunity to talk one-on-one with a health care provider and, if neceesary, will be directed to support or treatment services. There will also be several pamphlets and other educational materials available.

The Counseling Center is located in the Lee Drain Annex, between the Lee Drain and Farrington buildings.
For more information, call the Counseling Center at 936.294.1720 or 936.294.3786.

Opera Workshop To Include Fairy Tale Stories

The Sam Houston State Univerity Opera Workshop will present “Once Upon a Time…,” an evening of music based on two well-known and beloved fairy tales, on April 8-9.

The performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. both days in the Recital Hall.

The first one-act opera to be presented is a setting of the story of “Beauty and the Beast.”

“ The music in Vittorio Giannini’s opera “Beauty and the Beast” beautifully captures and expresses the fairy tale’s theme: the power of love and acceptance,” said director of operatic studies Mary Kay Lake.
Following “Beauty and the Beast,” members of the Opera Workshop will present “The True Story of Cinderella” by Warren Martin.

Complete with narration, this is the “Cinderella” story as you have never heard it before, according to Lake, as it is filled with fun from the downbeat to the final cut off.

“ Both operas are guaranteed to delight audiences of all ages,” Lake said.

Tickets are $5 for general admission, $3 for senior citizens and students, and free for SHSU faculty, staff and students with an SHSU I.D.

Tickets will be available at the door. For more information, call 936.294.1395 or 936.294.1360.

Art Works To Be Judged For Scholarships

Art and photography students will have the opportunity to display the pieces they have worked on throughout this year, and four will receive scholarships for the pieces, at the 6th annual Juried Student Show. The show will be held April 4-21 in the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery, located in Art Building F.

Students’ works will be examined by three guest judges, who will pick the scholarship winners. The scholarships given at the juried show have no restrictions, unlike other art scholarships, and all photography and art students are eligible, according to slide librarian Debbie Davenport.

Guest judges for the show include SHSU retired art professor Gene Eastman, associate professor in the Texas A&M Viz Lab Carol Lafayette, and Bearkat Books co-owner Danny Slater.

The artworks have already been judged, Davenport said, and the winners will be announced at a reception and ceremony held on April 14.

The reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. in the gallery, and the awards ceremony, where non-scholarship winners will also be awarded for their works, will be held at 6 p.m. in the Art Auditorium.

In addition, the department will host ‘open studios,’ where attendees will be able to walk through all the art classrooms to see where the students work, as well as art on the walls, Davenport said.

The Gaddis Geeslin Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, from noon to 5 p.m.

The works of students in the Textile Design Program at the Universidad Iberoamericana Puebla will be on display in the Lowman Student Center Art Gallery through April 8.

“ Textile Designs from Mexico” includes printed fabric and surface designs for interiors, designs for knit and embroidered fabrics, and printed and woven yarn dyed fabric for clothing and interiors.

The works in the exhibit were created by students under the instruction of Robert Smith Carter, professor at Universidad Iberoamercana, and includes designs that were included in the Surtex International Student Design Competition 2004.

A&M Professor To Speak On Leadership, Love

John Hoyle, professor of educational administration at Texas A&M University, will discuss “Leadership and the Force of Love” on Monday (April 4), at 10 a.m. in the Lowman Student Center Theatre.

The message will address leadership and organizational involvement and will apply to students’ professional life after college, according to Student Activities program coordinator Angie Burns.

Hoyle's message has been described as a “profound yet straightforward exploration of how leaders can inspire others to greatness through these six key actions: visioning, communicating, team working, empowering, mentoring, and evaluating,” Burns said.

Hoyle demonstrates how overcoming obstacles frequently faced by educators, such as the challenges of politics, hostility, selfishness, and violence, requires teamwork, motivation, empowerment, and communication.
