Neuropsychologist To Present On Louisiana Law
Clinical neuropsychologist
Glen Ally will discuss a very controversial law recently
passed in Louisiana regarding
the prescription of medications
on
Sept. 6, at
7 p.m. in the Criminal Justice Center Courtroom.
The law allows psychologists with specialized training to gain the authority
to prescribe certain medications. Louisiana is the second of our neighboring
states to pass such a law.
Ally was directly involved with the Louisiana initiative both for prescription
privileges and mental health parity.
Politically active both regionally and nationally, he is past president
of the Louisiana Psychological Association and currently serves as a Council
Delegate to the American Psychological Association.
“ Regardless of one’s position on this type of authority, it is likely
to come before the Texas legislature in future years,” said Mary Alice
Conroy, professor of psychology. “Anyone working in the mental health
field or receiving mental health services will need to be cognizant of
the issues.”
The free presentation is open to the public, and light refreshments will
follow.
The event is co-sponsored by SHSU and the Sam Houston Area Psychological
Association.

CJ Author To Discuss China, His Research Sept. 13
Author
Peter May will discuss the research experiences in China
that led to his book “The Firemaker” on
Sept. 13, at 2 p.m. in the Criminal Justice Center Courtroom.
May gained unprecedented access behind the scenes with
Chinese homicide detectives to research his books and the
monthly column in the Chinese
Police Magazine “Detective
World,” which was translated into “The Firemaker.”
“
He has been to places that few outsiders ever see, getting to know pathologists
and scientists at the police mortuary and forensic science departments in Shanghai
and Beijing,” a press release for May’s book tour said.
Called “stunningly original, highly topical and extremely well-written,” his
book “The Firemaker” is a fast-paced mystery that takes readers
on an adventure through the backstreets of Beijing with local homicide
detective Li Yan and Margaret Campbell, a forensic pathologist from Chicago.
Among May’s advisers for the book was College of Criminal Justice
dean Richard Ward.
After his discussion, May will be available to sign copies of his book.
For more information, call 936.294.1635.

and hear
from the internal auditor, according to program coordinator Tiffany
Flenoy.

and discuss the roles of the advisers in organizational disciplinary
issues.

Hotel
Adds Amenities Make Stay More Enjoyable
The University Hotel
has implemented several changes and upgrades to make guests
more comfortable and bring the hotel up to par with
national
chain
hotels,
according to general manager Richard Serrill.
Among those, are individual-cup coffee makers, irons and ironing
boards, all of which were added last year, as well as an exercise
room that
includes two
treadmills, two stationary bicycles and a multipurpose gym set.
The guest room entry system has also been upgraded from the old
fiber-optic key system to a new mag-stripe key system, with several
new security
features for
the hotel as well as guests, Serrill said.
“
The changes made last year were in response to comments made from our guests,” Serrill
said. “The additions of the coffee maker and ironing equipment
and the installation of an exercise room has brought the University
Hotel closer
to
the standards of modern hotel chains while giving our guest the
added convenience of being right on campus.”
In addition, the hotel has focused some attention on the restaurant,
CJ's Cafe, located on the second floor between the hotel and Criminal
Justice
Center,
adding a new hot lunch buffet and a salad bar.
Buffet prices are $5.50 for breakfast and $6.50 for lunch. Both
prices include a beverage. Soup or a side salad can also be added
for $1.50 more, and both are one-time-through options with the
hot buffet rotating menus, Serrill said.
“
The amount of traffic in the complex along with requests from our guests has
led to the addition of the hot buffet and salad bar open weekdays for lunch,” Serrill
said. “The atmosphere is warm and inviting as the dining
area is surrounded by windows on the north and south sides overlooking
soft
greenery
and neighboring
buildings.”
Serrill is hoping for an increase in visitors with the opening
of the baseball/softball complex and with increasing interest in
other
sports.
“
We are now located within walking distance from all major SHSU sporting venues--an
added bonus when parking is limited,” he said.
Both the hotel and CJ's Cafe are open to faculty, staff, students,
and the general public. For more information, call 936.294.1703.

To Recertify
Drug
Recognition
Experts
Sam Houston State University’s drug evaluation
and classification program will hold a Drug Recognition Experts
recertification
class on Tuesday (Aug.
30).
The class will be held from 8 p.m. to 5 p.m., in the Texas
Room of the George J. Beto Criminal Justice Center.
The class is free but is open only to peace officers that
are DRE certified. However, anyone may audit the classes
with permission
from program
director Cecelia Marquart, according to DEC staff associate
Patsy Collins.
Recertification is necessary every two years, and the class
draws officers from across the state, Collins said.
The DEC program is a transportation safety program focusing
on the detection and apprehension of drug-impaired drivers.
Developed in the early 1970s in Los Angeles, Calif., by the
Los Angeles Police Department, the program became so successful
in
identifying
drug-impaired drivers that it soon became an international
program.
The DEC program trains police officers and other public safety
officials as drug recognition experts or drug recognition
evaluators through
a three-phase training
curriculum.
Registration is required, but those interested may sign up
on the day of each class. For more information, call 936.294.3079.
